A coat that's practical and pretty?

So, I melted my lovely coat, it was just a black superdry one with a hood but it was very practical, although not that pretty.

It was cold and I was cooking in it and leant over the stove :(

Does anyone have any idea where I can get a not overly expensive, black coat, with a hood, that looks nice?

I like that but DP really really doesn't like those coats Sad

Hurr1cane · 14/12/2014 15:06

Why would he take the piss out of the Uniglo one? You've lost me....? Its a down jacket with a hood? Fairly bland imo but will keep you warm.

I love the Zara one.

It's the padding, he says it looks like the Michelin man.

He has an odd mind.

I love the padded coats but I'm chubby and it makes me look like a round quilted THING.

Hurr1cane · 14/12/2014 19:17

I like them. It's just DP really doesn't.

The Jack Wolskin Icegaurd coats are cosy and warm not massive and puffy

Well it depends on what you are after, but actually I think a really good alternative is to buy a very pretty coat that you love, and then layering it with something like this underneath

www.uniqlo.com/uk/store/goods/127499

I know it's one of the coats that your husband hates, but you'll be wearing it underneath a regular coat, so it won't notice. It's really not thick at all, since it is one of the "ultra light down" versions, but wearing it beneath something else will be insanely warm.

Plus this way you can use it underneath any number of coats, and they will all be just as warm, so you aren't limited to the same black coat day in and day out.

I got a beautiful coat from M and S a few weeks ago, but it isn't warm enough now the cold has kicked in. I'm going to buy one of these uniqlo things to layer under it, and as I said, that way I can use it under my other coats as well.

PS, just to add that it really is slim enough to wear under a coat.
