Should I be using a foundation sponge / brush?

Just that really, never have, just kind of spread it around with fingers. I've got away with it until now but heading towards 40 not so, I think the finish would've better with a brush or sponge. So what's best.what should I get?

I've started using a cheapo foundation sponge, just a supermarket one, and it def makes coverage better on my
