Agree with dry, I'm an hourglass with slightly broad shoulders so I cannot add volume there (shoulder pads, puffed sleeves etc) or I look top heavy. I also like to define my waist as it's about the only part of me that's genuinely tiny. Where possible, like blair I try to lengthen my legs. The right clothes can make such a difference.

With your body type I would be all about the legs. You'd never get me out of short skirts!

shopafrolic · 04/12/2014 22:53

Makes sense. I think I am I a mid season rut. And wishing I could afford to buy some more bits in my new colours. Still playing it safe in a lot of black and navy ATM.
Blair not sure where inside leg starts and finishes when you measure but yes, standing onthe tape, floor to groin 34"

shopafrolic · 04/12/2014 22:55

And yet when I wear skirts Amber all I get is "oh my God you've got legs" comments so I get all paranoid and revert back to trousers.

MarshaBrady · 04/12/2014 22:56

I do mostly skinnies and round neck and not too long so not much help. I find it hard to reach for anything else.

OneLittleLady · 04/12/2014 22:58

34''?!?! Shock Envy

I think it's easier to see what suits you when you have a more positive body image, if that makes sense? I've had much better hit rates with finding the right outfits now that I am not as negative about the way I look. I really do think spending some time working out the best bits of you, through your own observation and through what people like close friends and DH/DP's say really helps as it's easier to be critical of the outfit then and not your body, so instead of 'oh my hips are too big' it's 'this top sits at the wrong point, my hips haven't suddenly grown, the top just hides x bit or tucks oddly across y bit' IYSWIM? it's not quite the question you asked but i think its valid!

shopafrolic · 04/12/2014 23:05

Just realised was wearing Uggs when standing on tape so make that 33" Blush
Definitely valid One
And YY to the only things I reach for Marsha. I think I need to be braver with the skirts and dresses before I hit 50 and feel I've missed the boat!

maradesbois · 04/12/2014 23:09

Shop you're tall, slim and well proportioned so don't need to worry about disguising problem areas. As you 'can' wear most things think instead about shapes, styles and colours you feel good in.

QueenC yay for the shoes! That's sweet about the size and him trying to surprise you. Have a brilliant weekend.

Stokey original draughty sash windows here too. Have never looked into replacing but think its mega expensive. We have good thick curtains Smile.

Linus Joe Dassin reminds dh of childhood too.

Santa your dh's views on vegetables sounds familiar. Dh thinks kale is the devil's food and refused to eat it at the weekend. Left to his own devices in the kitchen we would survive on rare steak and cheese.

Sleep have a lovely evening, your menu sounds fab.

I had a quick look at Outnet clearance earlier. Picked up a Bodas silk slip for £25 but wasn't inspired by anything else. Some nice jumpers but really don't need anything.

Just packed this weekend's capsule wardrobe in record time. Ok, for 2 nights away including one smart dinner:

Outwear: green paul costelloe coat with Hermès shawl & brown leather gloves.
Evening: Plum Zarita with opaques and choo patent heels & dvf clutch.
Day: khaki theory cashmere sweater dress, black ts jeans to be worn with i) zara ivory silk shirt & khaki I&I jumper (gifted by the lovely Lib) and ii) new tk maxx bargain cashmere crew neck. I love this jumper, worn it once already this week.
Shoes & accessories: either new burgundy colts or brown tod's boots. Am being ruthless and not bringing both.

All of the above plus toiletries sorted in about 20 mins. A record for me, hand luggage only is the way to go!

AmberNectarine · 05/12/2014 07:24

Morning all,

shop that's because they're jealous - know I am. I think my inside leg measurement is about 15in.

Work Xmas party tonight (see I don't bother going to work anymore but I do still turn up for the free drinks). No idea what I'm wearing, dress code is 'casual' but bollocks to that, it's Christmas. Vaguely narrowed it down to one of my three Helmut Lang dresses, a dark green Topshop one or some black sequin leggings and a shirt of some description. Definitely taking the De Manta and will probably wear the Louboutin instruments of torture unless I can make my lovely Stuart Weitzman shoe boots work.

First need to get through the school Xmas Bazaar and a trip to Asda, what glamour! Have lovely days all!

LinusDKD · 05/12/2014 07:36

I vote for the black sequin leggings and killer shoes amber

I saw some green sequin ones (French Connection?) on a blog recently and I completely fell in love with them but have nowhere to wear them.

I haven't even worn the Paige Palomas but they are hopefully going to get their first outing next week when I'm going out with some friends. No idea what I'm going to wear them with though.

shop I am also very jealous of your long legs, being a shortarse.

mara impressive packing! I am already dreading packing for when we are spending Christmas with my DP and DPIL.

Wearing my new J Crew Tippi jumper and my Jimmies today with my bikers. Cold today!

Sleepwhenidie · 05/12/2014 08:11

Hi everyone, I'm feeling a bit jaded after a late night. Food went down very well, canapés (posh cheese and pineapple...feta with baby beets drizzled with pesto and blue cheese and fig), Thai fish cakes, smoked salmon blinis and mini veg spring rolls then chilli all well received Smile. The Christmas cocktail was delicious, will definitely do that again - 75cl bottle prosecco, 125ml Cointreau and 500ml cranberry juice mixed with ice.

Cold grey morning again, think it's a day to skip the exercise and maybe hit Selfridges for some Christmas shopping. I think suede JBrands, shearling pistols, thick grey cashmere will probably swelter in the shop. Out with DH tonight, not sure where yet, will be an effort. Xmas Grin

Sleepwhenidie · 05/12/2014 08:12

Oh and Shop Envy at leg measurement! You have nothing to balance out so stop looking!

maradesbois · 05/12/2014 08:17

Morning all,

Linus would the palomas work with one of your equipment shirts?

Amber de manta sounds fab as do sequinned leggings. If you can't wear them to Christmas party when can you? That reminds me One did you try out your sequinned skirts?

Off to get ready, taxi coming in 45 mins and still in dressing gown having coffee. Long train ride to come so will be back.

libertychick · 05/12/2014 08:29

You should get those legs out at every opportunity shop!

Quite right amber at going to the Christmas work do - it's called 'keeping in touch' and is very important for team morale, in fact you should get extra drinks for your demonstration of loyalty Grin

Mara I am delighted the sweater makes the cut for a weekend away.

I was packing last night too as we are off to fuerteventura for a week - yay! Have packed 4 dresses, one pair cropped trousers, 2 short sleeve cotton shirts, 3 t shirts, 2 board shorts, 2 bikini tops, beach cover up, denim jacket, 1 sensible rocket dog flip flops, 1 jewelled flip flop. Will wear skinnies, sweater, grey leather converse and uniglo down gilet for travelling. Unfortunately have to bring laptop, phone and study texts as I need to study a lot and do some work while away. But doing it beside the pool in 20C should make it bearable.

libertychick · 05/12/2014 08:38

shop I often buy things because I get 'blinded' by the fact they are in fashion or look great on others and then decide a month later that they don't suit me. I think a HoC style day would be a good idea for me even if just to confirm what I definitely shouldn't wear. I have looked into doing a combined 1:1 colour and style day but it's £400+. I could do them separately which is cheaper but then that means finding two days in my diary and that really difficult ATM (wow that sounds precious!)

MarshaBrady · 05/12/2014 09:07

How exciting! Have fun Lib and Mara

MarshaBrady · 05/12/2014 09:08

That sounds so nice, by the pool btw [green]

MarshaBrady · 05/12/2014 09:09

Ha I really thought it was green!

Linus and Amber they do sound great.

MarshaBrady · 05/12/2014 09:11

Shop I completely get what you mean. I just can't be faffed with tights in winter either, and since I don't have to for work, I definitely don't when I'm home. But I should try a dress to go out.

shopafrolic · 05/12/2014 09:19

Morning all!
Enjoyed the chat last night - thanks. I think I'm wobbling because my wardrobe was sorted (for an Autumn) and now I'm almost starting again.
Mara loved your packing list, safe travels and an enjoyable weekend
Lib perfect timing for you guys to have a break (I had forgotten). Enjoy, and I hope you don't have to do too much work
Sleep love the sound of your outfit today - so cosy and stylish. Glad last night went well - I've made a note of that cocktail. Wish reminds me Linus I had to order in Passoa, and I'm supposed to pick it up tomorrow :)
Amber I am Envy of your social life. Sequinned leggings sound fab.
Oh and I"m loving how sensible everyone has been with the Outnet clearance. What did you buy Marsha?

Sleepwhenidie · 05/12/2014 09:20

Sequin leggings sound good Amber, linky?

MarshaBrady · 05/12/2014 09:31

Shop funny you should ask as I was just linking to get everyone's opinions on what I should potentially keep or send back.

I&I cashmere but do I have enough navy / blue in my life? Also I find it expensive still, fp is crazy and at that discount it's reasonable rather than clearance price. But useful?

Also Erdem top because it was a good discount and I wonder if it will make me wear a skirt like the pic Confused but out of my zone, are the colours too strong?

What do you all think,

Also 7fam skinnies to try on but not high rise, not clearance, will see what they are like.

MarshaBrady · 05/12/2014 09:37

Oh and 7fam but mid rise only.

Feel I need to send something back, but can't decide.

Sleepwhenidie · 05/12/2014 09:38

Lib I am Envy about your trip, have a wonderful time. You too Mara!

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 05/12/2014 09:42

Have fun mara and lib, sounds like you've both done well on the packing! Hope QueenC has a great weekend away too.

lib I actually think it can be good to have a break between colours and style as together they would be quite overwhelming. It took me ages to come to terms with my colours so I can't imagine how shop feels doing it twice. It is nice that the consultants will do bespoke days though, I am doing one after new year for style with my sister and colours for my mum.

Marsha for the I&I, at that price I would be comparing to uniqlo cashmere in terms of quality, which I think is very good, I don't own any I&I. I love the shape of the Erdem and great discount but not sure about the colour combined with the print.

Amber I totally agree re "casual" xmas parties - it's an excuse to get dressed up surely! Sequin leggings sound fab but it would have to be a dress for me.

Glad your evening went well Sleep, food all sounds delicious and I will also be making a note of the cocktail recipe :)

Have lovely fridays all!

QueenCardigan · 05/12/2014 09:54

Morning all. Just having some relaxing time whilst dd and granny make cookies before I pick dh up from work. I am so ridiculously excited.

shop I know what you mean about skirts. On the odd occasion when I have worn them to school you get the comments of ooh, look at you, are you going somewhere special. People don't mean to be nasty, it's just that if you normally wear trousers/jeans it looks like you've made an effort. I think the trick is to wear them often and then people stop noticing.

Wrt to body shape I think you have to take a lot of it with a pinch of salt. I've never worked out if I'm hourglass, pear or Apple. I think some people will obviously be a shape and the rules to avoid certain things may apply better but otherwise it's all about details and proportions. What I found useful about the style day was being advised to wear softly curved things rather than angular. But not full on curved things if that makes sense. So collars/lapels on jackets to be curved rather than sharp points for example. Materials to be more fluid than structured. Also with proportions I need to think small to medium. So nothing oversized/boyfriend or large patterns.

I think to a certain extent we all get stuck in a style rut once we know what we like and what suits. I pretty much wear jeans with a navy or grey top and coloured cardi. I like to mix it up a bit more for going out though and so have recently bought a purple and a blue top. Not exactly out there but it gets me out of always sticking to navy. Sometimes it's good to just go shopping and try on things out of your comfort zone which will either give you more options or make you realise you're better off sticking to the style you have. Have you though about flared jeans if you feel stuck in a sunny rut. With your leg length they have the potential to look amazing. Even my flares with heels make my legs look long and I'm about a 31".

Sorry, that turned into a really long post Blush.
