Number one tip for smokey eye make up?

I'm going to a 1920s themed party tomorrow and I'm really keen to try dramatic eye make up. But I have very round, fairly deep eyes and have literally never managed to pull off the look.

What's your number one tip? Techniques, brushes, type of make up etc? I have been watching tutorials and tried again today, but I just end up a smudgy mess. Can't make false eyelashes stick, never mastered liquid eyeliner! I can pop to super drug, boots, or a small debenhams tomorrow. And I wear contacts so find eye make up irritating at the best of times!

I have invested in a striking lippy but would love to get the eyes right too!

If you have a benefit or Mac make up counter nearby you could either go there on the day and ask them to apply smoky eye make up. They are usually well up for it and you may find something you want to buy too. Or you could do this a few days before so you can get the technique and buy anything you need and do it yourself the night of the party.

Otherwise there's always eyelash extensions which are excellent and they stay on for weeks too and then all you need is eyeliner (you won't need mascara at all with the eyelash extensions!)

Hope that's a few ideas? :)

I use the pixie three in one liner thing. Its fantastic.

I just put some liner at the top and bottom [ its not liquid so its easy..its like a fine tipped crayon] smudge it with the smudgy bit then dab some of the shadow..its inside it too and smudge that. i have never been able to do the smoky eye look up until i bought this. You could also do the shadow first then the eyeliner and then a good mascara like benefit theyre real.

oh and i have the smoky black.

PorkyMinch · 14/11/2014 18:53

Number one tip is apply your eye makeup before the rest of your face. Then baby wipe the eye shadow spill from your cheeks before foundation.

SageSeymour · 14/11/2014 18:54

You can't do smokey eyes plus a striking lipstick - it's one or the other.

ScooseIsLoose · 14/11/2014 18:57

Real techniques starter set are your friend you can get them in boots urban decay smoked palette too if your Debenhams has a ud counter and use an eyeshadow primer! The U.S. One is best imp

For a 20s look, I'd cover the whole lid in a dark grey or brown eyeshadow and blend/fade out over the socket, almost up to the eyebrow. Liner on lower and upper lids and a couple of layers of mascara. Finish with a bit of metallic grey or gold over the lid and brow bone.

Don't forget doll-cheek blusher and lipgloss.

tethersend · 14/11/2014 19:01

I'd do foundation first, including over the eyelids, as this gives the eyeshadow something to stick to. I turn my head to the side to avoid spilling the eyeshadow on my cheeks Grin

ScooseIsLoose · 14/11/2014 19:02

hope this works

Shootthemoon · 14/11/2014 19:31

Thanks!

Flux I had lash extensions for my wedding and really loved them, but I can't really afford that on top of the dress, shoes, hotel etc I have already splashed out on! Plus I am hopeless at keeping up with them. But if they were cheaper I would have them done always.

I was thinking about going to a make up counter. But I haven't booked and every time I go in they are heaving at the moment.

pixie I will look into it!

scoose thanks and I will look for those. Funnily enough I have already watched that video, it's great!

tethers thank you - you've advised me well before under a different username, thanks!

Can you apply eyeliner first? I tempted to as it's the trickiest bit for me.

Oh yes. Do it any way round you like. I don't bother with liner on the top lashes at all as I use dark brown or black eyeshadow.

trixymalixy · 14/11/2014 19:42

I do my own lashes. I buy the eyelure individual knot free lashes. They're not as difficult as you might think to put on.

I would look on YouTube for tutorials for the eyeshadow.

Shootthemoon · 14/11/2014 19:44

Wow that sounds impossibly brave trixy :D

If you want a Flicky eyeliner look you can do it using a tea spoon as a guide. You tube it it's actually quite good. If not go for mascara and red lips. Have a good time
