Tried the haircut and it looked awful, so I thought fuck it and shaved all my hair off.

Why?! Why did I do that?

I'm really pale and now have sticky up ginger hair.

I look like an egg with marmelade on top Sad

So is it a number 8 all over? If so I can give you some advice on how to make the best of it.....

Firstly take the sides in shorter to a number 6. Same at the back to but only up to where the skull comes out ( so bottom third).

You then need to go through the front, crown and over the ears with thinning scissors ( these are a couple of quid from Superdrug etc)to make it less fuzz ball. Use some matt putty to define if and stick bits and pieces of it up. Look at WIP hairport pictures to give you an idea.

Also it might be worth dyeing it a good light reddish brown all over to even up the colour. Something like the shade 6.35.

Coumarin · 06/11/2014 18:20

No, sorry the MN haircut is all wrong. It's time we started saying it instead of encouraging people to do it and then post pictures Anyone tempted should put the scissors down or throw them into the garden next door/down a cesspit, whatever will stop you. Then pick up the phone and make a hair appointment. It's like a wonky Rachel.

OP, you could dye your hair a wild colour? Now it's so short you've got elbow room to experiment.

Selinasupreme · 06/11/2014 18:24

I gave myself an undercut a couple of years ago which resulted in me skinning 50% of my head. Like "right said fred" bald, I didn't have the heart to even it out by shaving the other half as it was shoulder length so I sported a very shady combover. If you want to go down the wig route, geisha wigs are amazing and really good prices! I ordered one for Halloween and it looks natural

crunchyfrog · 06/11/2014 18:25

I did it once. Got a mullet. It wasn't good. Even the hairdresser laughed.

ArmpitBiscuit · 06/11/2014 19:01

milmingebag yeah 8 all over, thank you I will try that tomorrow!

Can't dye a funky colour, I want to be a redhead again hence having quite significant roots. I was trying to grow my dyed brunette hair out.

Might get a few facial piercings and tattoos to complete my look though Grin

Why did none of you fuckers tell me that the mumsnet haircut was a disaster before I bloody did it? Wink Grin

selina love the sound of your fetching combover Grin

I shall check out the wigs, think I may need to get one. Or an extensive collection of hats.

God, 20.... Yes, you can pull anything off at 20.

Dumpylump · 06/11/2014 19:07

Well in fairness.......you didn't ask, did you? You just went all guns blazing!
My friend suffers from alopecia, she lost her hair again after a very traumatic time a couple of years ago. It is growing back now and she has a really short pixie style.
She posts photos on FB every now again of the latest mad colour - at the minute it's a kind of lilacy blue and looks awesome.
You could try some crazy colour - they're only temporary and might cheer you up a bit until it grows a little.

Iggly · 06/11/2014 19:11

The MN works for me! I don't just cut across and leave it, I do snip into the ends as well etc.

FavadiCacao · 06/11/2014 19:31

I'm guessing you tried the ponytail cut?! Did it in 1989! It went a bit wonky but side sweeps were in fashion then, so I chose to wear it with penache and played with accessories. The same year, I tiried russet red henna and it turned properly carrot orange, never wore pink again. As soon as my hair recovered, I permed it: I wore it with a bubbly personality. Then I got rid of the frizz by going no4 at the back and and few inches on top and soften it with hotpants! Dd (21) had even more disasters but that's her story to tell.

Your hair will relax and will be more manageable in a couple of days. :) Good job is winter and you can play with hats outdoors and scarfs or laces indoors to soften the edges. You're 20, you can pull it off! Maybe, a pair of skinny jeans, biker jacket, Doc Marten's with pretty laces and funky nails to show off your new style? Distraction is the key, the same as with clothing -emphasize what you like to distract from what you don't like.

ArmpitBiscuit · 06/11/2014 20:22

I trusted the power of MN far too much Wink

Tbf my hair is orange anyway so that's the funky colour sorted.. skinny jeans, biker jacket. I will try to rock the look!

3yo ds is amazed, 18mo is mainly confused at the moment. Dp is refusing to look at me Grin he'll learn to love it..

And love it he will! Grin

Cocolepew · 06/11/2014 20:40

You should be able to style a no. 8 cut, I have had a pixie shorter. Mines an inch at the moment.

ChubbyKitty · 06/11/2014 20:41

Ohhhh that's how I trim my split ends after I bleach my roots!

I couldn't actually take any proper length off though ShockShock

If it helps, when I was your age(I'm a whopping 23 nowWink) I had to have my have super super short because I bleached it every day for a week and then put red on it and had a 4 inch wad of split ends. For 6 months I wore wigs and these days I have nice ish shoulder length pearl blonde hair. which needs it's roots doing

I promise you when it grows back this will be a fantastic anecdote for nights out!

Also, it's so weird to think 1994 was 20 years ago. Does anyone else think the 90s were 10 years ago??

ArmpitBiscuit · 06/11/2014 20:58

coco I'm going to take it down to a no. 6 on the sides and lower back tomorrow. Then try and find some putty in boots. Hopefully it'll start to look better!

chubby I initially aimed to trim my split ends, hoping it would make my hair grow quicker. Then it just got shorter, and wonkier and then all mad mullet-y and then I just... Plugged the clippers in and voila Confused Grin

It's not so weird to think that 1994 was 20 years ago for me..

I was born in 1994 and I'm 20 years old Wink

We all make mistakes Grin

I've found cod liver oil capsules make hair grow quite fast. It's made mine much healthier too!

ChubbyKitty · 06/11/2014 21:10

This is trueGrin
