"Slippers" or "House Shoes"?

JoesToes · 27/10/2014 20:00

What do you call them? What do posh people call them? I ask because I've got a website selling my hand sewn felt slippers and today an advisor said I should perhaps call them "house shoes". It hadn't even entered my head. I thought that was a bit American but maybe I'm wrong. I'd really welcome your opinion. thanks!

I am American, i dont know anyone that calls the "house shoes", I thought that was a Britishism.

It certainly would be useful to have any and every potential search term on the page. Slippers, house shoes, moccasins.

Annietheacrobat · 27/10/2014 20:17

I have honestly never heard anyone use the term house shoes

Annietheacrobat · 27/10/2014 20:18

Am British

JoesToes · 27/10/2014 21:09

So that's one "no" from each side of the Atlantic, thanks!

I clicked on this thread because I didn't know what a house shoe was! They're slippers in my neck of the woods.

CointreauVersial · 27/10/2014 22:08

What the hell are "house shoes"?

DraaaamaghAlpacaaaagh · 27/10/2014 22:12

I'm British & would always say 'slippers'.

I've never heard of 'house shoes'.

Not sure you're allowed to link to your own website on here, though, OP.

JoesToes · 27/10/2014 22:30

I'll go and remove that link removed just in case it's really naughty....... I'm surprised there are no votes for house shoes, anyone?

House shoes sounds pretty naff. Slippers.

SecretRed · 27/10/2014 22:33

Anyone who calls slippers house shoes is very poncey indeed.

wooooosualsuspect · 27/10/2014 22:33

Stealth advertising? Very naughty.
And house shoes sounds a bit daft.

Archfarchnad · 27/10/2014 22:35

House shoes is an over-literal translation of the German word for slippers, Hausschuhe. I've never heard an English native speaker use the term.

JoesToes · 27/10/2014 22:38

Thanks all, I think I'm going to stick with slippers. DraaaamaghAlpacaaaagh (great name!) I just can't see how to take out that website link. Can you edit your own posts (like you can on facebook)?

Flingmoo · 27/10/2014 22:41

Yeah I was about to say its a German thing.

As an aside, DH's family are Swiss, and like the Germans they're bloody obsessed with their house shoes. I get barked at if I dare to walk around with bare feet, no matter what time of year or temperature! As if I'll catch pneumonia unless I wear slippers. (DH's feet stink, he could do with airing them out a bit, but he was bought up in this oppressive house shoe culture so I literally never see his feet bare..!)

DealForTheKids · 27/10/2014 22:44

I know of "house coats" which are essentially dressing gowns - I'm guessing it's just a logical extension?

DraaaamaghAlpacaaaagh · 27/10/2014 23:41

JoesToes you'll have to ask MNHQ to edit your post for you, you can't edit your own posts.

SquirrelSwarm · 27/10/2014 23:52

I've never heard of house shoes in Britain either, although I've had damn good Austrian Hausschuhe before. Just put that and house shoes in the meta tags.

ShoesAndPsychology · 28/10/2014 01:33

I think if your site is international then slippers may not translate as well as house shoes in certain languages, therefore perhaps call them slippers but mention 'these are more than just slippers, they are house shoes' in the description then it'll get picked up by google etc if anyone searched them

YoBitch · 28/10/2014 01:39

I live in Ireland and I know some people who call a dressing gown a house coat...so maybe it's an Irish thing too!?

fourwoodenchairs · 28/10/2014 06:23

I didn't even know house shoes existed as a word!

catimini · 28/10/2014 06:45

im still laughing about the thread with the "Artisanal Slippers"...I'll try and find it.

Truelymadlysleepy · 28/10/2014 06:45

DH's family wear house shoes. They're old, but highly polished shoes that are no longer fit for outside wear. Seen as more 'respectable' than my knackered old slippers apparently.

catimini · 28/10/2014 06:47

artisanal slippers

Northumberlandlass · 28/10/2014 07:04

Always slippers.
DH says house shoes But then again I say 'dressing gown' and he says 'house coat' Confused

JoesToes · 28/10/2014 10:02

and, being a bit cheeky here,Northumberlandlass, which of you is the posh one? Tried google images for "house shoes" and "slippers". "House shoes" definitely showed a lot more men's stuff so maybe it's more of a gender bias.
