How do you build coverage with foundation?

So if your foundation has buildable coverage just how do you do it? Do you layer with time between each layer or put another layer on top with no time between layers? Or do you not layer and just put loads on at once?

i use mac face and body foundation which is great for layering - it seems watery once out the bottle but its not watery overall
i put on my base layer and leave for about a minute then apply usually with a brush on the areas where i need more coverage

Layering is just that- putting on one coat after another with drying time in between.
