Help me find a wedding dress?

After looking around, I think I like this sort of lace but haven't found a dress in it I like yet! I'm fat curvy so not sure this style would suit and I think I'd get that "squidge" over the top in the boob/armpit area so avoiding this style if I can. Has anyone seen any nice ones? Or would know what to google?

When are you getting married, how much have you got to spend and how long are you prepared to spend looking?! Grin

I am getting married next year and this is what I did before I first went shopping (but it may have been a bit much...!)

  • Searched on Hitched.co.uk, The Knot, Brides magazine site, all the high street shops I could think of (Monsoon, Coast, Debenhams, BHS, J crew, House of fraser, Phase Eight)
  • Use Pinterest to search for specific dress details to find designers that make dresses I like
  • Browse those designers' websites
  • Pick dresses I like and find stockists of those designers and those particular dresses (harder than it sounds...)

If you like that sort of shape, I would google/pinterest search "lace fishtail wedding dress" and see what other features appeal to you (train length, neckline, sleeves, etc).

Good luck :)

Hi, thanks for the reply I am clueless so every tiny bit of help is great!

Getting married Sep 2015, willing to spend up to £1000 but that is top, top end so anything under that would be much preferable, willing to spend as much virtual time as possible but real time between work and 2 small DC is limited!

I've looked at high street but they don't seem as supportive/structured as wedding dresses from specialist shops do, more like lovely "normal" dresses iyswim and I need all the sucky-in help I can get!

I've googled "lace dresses" (not sure enough on the shape I want/need yet) but it brings up more pretty intricate lace ones rather than the bigger, almost crochet lace I want?

Oh ffs I just typed up a long post with links and it went poof.

Davids bridal have a big store in Westfield Stratford but more importantly they have an online catalogue with prices, which should give you an indication about what you could get. They have lots around the £1000 mark. I love a few of the Melissa Sweet ones, and one on p37 of the catalogue. hopefully this is a link to the catalogue which is £795 with sleeves and all over lace.

Phase Eight dresses are good, too. They seem to have more beading than lace at the moment, but keep looking.

TheCowThatLaughs · 21/10/2014 12:23

Have you tried googling "crochet lace wedding dress" or "crochet lace dress"?

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 21/10/2014 12:30

Watters is another (American) brand which I think might be around that price range, with a lot of styles, also their sister brand Wtoo (same website). Sorry I can't be more specific as (as OldRoan said) the vast majority of sites don't have prices, so unless you do a lot of research or go to a stockist, it can be very frustrating trying to work out how much they are.

They have a few stockists around the country I think.

OldRoan · 21/10/2014 12:39

Ooh yes Blair. I know there is a shop in...Twickenham? Somewhere like that that has lots of them. The Wtoo range is lovely. My extensive research watching bridal dress shows on sky suggests they should be affordable for you, but I don't know if there is a mark up in the UK.

OldRoan · 21/10/2014 12:47

Also BHLDN. They don't have any stores in the UK (grr) so you would need to sort a dress maker local to you who could make adjustments, but you have enough time that you could probably get one shipped and then adjusted. You might find that you just end up throwing money away on shipping/returns though.

TheCowThatLaughs Yes, I did but then it brings up things like this which is a bit too hippy/boho for my taste
I think my main problem is that I don't know what that kid of "bigger" lace is called

Mine was by Benjamin Roberts and they are mostly around the £1000 mark I think, he has a couple of ranges on the website.

I would say - yes do lots of research, but the best thing is to book a series of appointments at good bridal boutiques (and often they are hard to get appointments for, especially if you want several in one day) and try on as many as you can. The style I was sure I wanted, didn't look right to me at all and I ended up loving dresses the complete opposite style to what I thought I would. It's very different when you start trying on versus looking online. It really threw me as I thought I knew and so was back to the drawing board.

My other tip is if you want a veil, don't spend £££ - mine was £14 from a Chinese seller on EBay. Veils are ridiculously overpriced for what is just a length of tulle. Mine was full length and had crystals scattered too. The bridal boutiques will show you similar but it will cost upwards of £200 for the same thing. Not like you're going to wear it again Grin

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 21/10/2014 14:08

Strangely it helped me to focus on what I didn't want. I was right about all those things.

If you have time (I didn't really) then it could be a good idea to try on a few styles before you start looking online, then at least you can narrow it down by style, fabric, shape etc before you choose a few specific styles to go back and try (as ThisBitch said, it's harder than you think to get appointments).

This has been the worst thing about having an 8 month engagement!

Try searching for 'corded lace wedding dress' - that's what the Ines dress is, and should bring up similar styles. It certainly does on Pinterest.

trulybadlydeeply · 21/10/2014 14:39

Maggie Sottero dresses are beautiful, but will be the very top end of your budget.

Their dresses are all corseted and will hold you in beautifully.

You really, really need to go and try stuff on, what you imagine will and will not suit you will likely not be the case!
