Clarifying shampoo, does it work?

I changed my shampoo a couple of months ago to Kerastase Bain Satin. I use the masque too with it as a conditioner as my hair is dry at the ends and highlighted too.

Recently I have noticed an oily patch on one side of my hair at the top, I wash it everyday but it is still there when I am drying it. Decided I may have build up so have just ordered a clarifying shampoo. Will this fix it? Never used clarifying shampoos before but am assuming (maybe wrongly) that this patch may just be a build up of products.

Yes seems to work for me. Kerastase Bain de Force is my regular shampoo/conditioner but I use a Pantene clarifying shampoo (recommended on here ages ago).

I ordered the Kerastase one online, wish I had known about the Pantene one. Why do you use it? Do you get the oily build up too?

I use Paul Mitchell clarifying shampoo and find it cleans my hair thoroughly.

Yes I use the Aveda one but I'm sure they all do a similar thing. I use it for the same reason, OP. Occasionally I get a greasy patch that won't go away after washing with my regular shampoo. A quick do with clarifying shampoo and my hair is back to normal.

My new fav is Balance Lift shampoo by Fushi, works like a charm, even better than the Pantene one (which i used to use before), but have you seen the ingredients in Pantene?? Don't want those chemicals seeping into my brain haha

Try washing with fairy liquid (seriously!) once every few weeks. Follow up with a good conditioner and voila, fluffy clean hair! My hairdresser told me about this and I'm a convert. Key is not to do it too often to dry your hair out.

Apple cider vinegar, 100ml added to 400ml water, is a great hair clarifier. Shampoo out afterwards to stop the smell. I'm not particularly into "natural" remedies but definitely the best - and cheapest - thing that I've used.

Another vote for Fairy Liquid and a rinse of water and white vinegar.

(I don't use apple cider vinegar as it has bits in it, like orange juice).

I do the Fairy liquid trick once every couple of months too. I dilute it before use though, don't just blob a thick lump on your head!

Blackheadedgull The bits are called the 'mother'? Perhaps yours is the filtered kind but the ACV I buy looks like cloudy apple juice .

Yes, I used a redken one which was brilliant. When I ran out I also used bicarb, which worked just as well

I will rather stay away from apple cider vinegar as it can disturb the natural pH of your scalp if not done properly.

But I love a shampoo with ACV (like Fekkai). It makes my hair feel fresh and energized.

BTW: A Clarifying shampoo also works as an effective Anti Residue Shampoo because it doesn't leave any traces of buildup from its own ingredients.

So that's another good reason to use them.

Especially if you have hard water, you'll know. Regular shampoos don't rinse in hard water and therefore leave that sticky paste on your scalp. Hardly visible but it makes your hair heavy.

Clarifying products won't. They play well with hard and well water.
