Anyone had the No. 7 foundation shade scanner thingy done?

I had this done on Monday as I'm in the market for a new foundation and fancied trying a No. 7 one after seeing good reviews.

I am rather pale and the woman on the counter calculated that 'Calico' is a match for my skin. I have perioral dermatitis so have to be very careful what products I use, so she gave me a sample to try to see if I'm allergic to it or not.

I've used it for a few days and it doesn't seem to irritate me, but the colour is all wrong. It looks very pink/orangey on my skin Sad I have a bit of redness on my nose & spreading slightly accross my cheeks, and on my chin so I don't know if this is the problem? I originally thought it was down to the loose powder I've been using afterwards but I checked before applying the powder today and it still looks weird.

Has anyone else had this done and the colour hasn't suited?

I also got matched as Calico on my jawline, but am a bit darker (Cream) on my cheeks due to redness.

I mix the two to make it a warm shade that isn't too dark.

I notice that No7 foundation sits in my pores when I'm dehydrated!

LynetteScavo · 17/10/2014 23:14

It worked for me....maybe I just got lucky. I use the "Lift and Illuminate" and it's great.

roughtyping · 17/10/2014 23:32

Felix they've always been nice to me Grin I love Illamasqua stuff, I wore Skin Base on my wedding day, it is fab. But I'm a total cheapskate so it is my Special Foundations for Nights Out Wink

(Think it's around £20)

roughtyping · 17/10/2014 23:32

*foundation, obv

Fabulassie · 18/10/2014 09:05

I remember the girl using the little device, but I don't remember if we stuck with the colour initially recommended.

I always take a mirror and go outside to check foundation when I am getting demonstrations at makeup counters.

Fabulassie · 18/10/2014 09:10

Oh, I forgot to say that I have tried several foundations this year and have gone back to No. 7. I tried the new liquid Bare Minerals, the Benefit Hello Oxygen or whatever it's called, and a couple others. Liked them all at first, but have gone back to No. 7 Protect and Perfect, of which I'm on my second bottle.

VodkaSoakedThor · 18/10/2014 09:38

Didn't work well for me. The device matched me to Soft Rose. I knew as soon as I saw the shade that it wasn't right for me as I'm very pale. She tried it on my skin and it was far too pink and dark. I looked at the other colours and suggested she try Cool Ivory which wasn't a bad match but defeated the point of using the device.

LynetteScavo · 18/10/2014 09:58

When I had mine done, I was next to a large window...I'm wondering if that helped.

VodkaSoakedThor · 18/10/2014 10:39

I think some natural daylight must help. I had mine done in a huge Boots in a mall, no windows anywhere.

TheWoollybacksWife · 18/10/2014 10:51

I had mine done next to a large window too. They matched me as Cool Vanilla and it is perfect. I've finally found a shade that suits me after about 30 years of trying and I don't look like I'm wearing stage make up Smile

SorrelForbes · 18/10/2014 10:59

I was matched to Cool Ivory. It's absolutely perfect on me. I use the Lift and Luminate foundation which is fine for everyday. I have failed (despite many attempts) to get a perfect match at YSL, Dior, EL, Lancôme and Chanel. Once Chanel lady actually told me that their shades just weren't a match for me at all and to just stick with the No.7! I thought that the YSL Touche Éclat would be a winner but I've been matched to about six different shades, none of them right.

I do have the Armani Silk foundation but I had to try about six shades, constantly telling the assistant that I wanted to match my own colour and not go darker as it currently the fashion, apparently, to get a decent match and whilst I love the look (texture and coverage), colour wise it still isn't quite right.

I have tricky skin Grin

FelixFelix · 18/10/2014 11:25

Very mixed reviews then! I agree that part of the problem is no natural lighting in many of the stores. Certainly the ones near me don't have any windows and the ones that do have the no7 counter miles away from them. I will probably go back and give it another try but if it's still not right ill try something else. I really want a good match as it's cheap compared to most good foundations and has great reviews online!

The only two Boots near me large enough to have No 7 counters both open to the outdoors. I sometimes buy makeup at House of Fraser, as well. I would never buy foundation without being able to run outside with my pocket mirror to check in daylight. I'll buy a lipstick indoors, but never foundation.

I'm really lucky to have a huge Boots with a lot of makeup counters - all the regular ones from department stores (except MAC) and even a Max Factor counter. I love being able to buy drugstore makeup from a proper counter and so I've bought a fair bit of Max Factor stuff.

Someone upthread mentioned a Chanel lady encouraging her to stick with No 7. I have had similar great service from Chanel at my local Boots - she did a full face makeover, let me run outside to check in daylight with her hand mirror, and fully understood that I wanted to see how the foundation wore for a day. She wrote everything down on a card so that I could come back. I wasn't happy with the foundation she tried on me that day but I'm going back today because I want to try another. I am not willing to spend that sort of money on impulse and she totally understood. She also convinced me that wearing pressed powder was the answer to my main problem and advised me to just go buy any cheap pressed powder (so I got Max Factor.) That sort of service makes me come back.

I'm actually on pretty friendly terms with several of the counter ladies in the Arndale Boots! Keeps me coming back.

(I have a makeup addiction, as you can see!)

yummypickledeggs · 18/10/2014 15:11

I had it done and came out as Calico too.
I bought some foundation- they dewy one whatever it is- and it was too dark/ too pink/ too grey looking.
I didn't know they'd have refunded or swapped so I gave it away.

The problem with their shade matcher is that it is limited to the colours they have- obviously.

I think they have around 10-12 shades whereas Bobbi Brown runs into 22-24.

OP Have you tried either Clinique or Bobbi Brown? I am currently using Clinique Perfectly Real in 01 shade.
I am always the palest shade available- though not Alabaster in B Brown because it's almost white.

FelixFelix · 18/10/2014 15:48

I used to use Clinique a few eyes ago. It was their anti blemish one. The lightest one ended up being too dark for me eventually Confused I think my skin is getting paler as I get older!

Felix - I do think skin pales with age. I used to give mum my 'too dark' foundations, then about 10 years ago realised she had got paler than me! Mind you, with her mobility problems she wasn't actually out and about all day.

kahori · 18/10/2014 16:33

I came out as Cool Vanilla and it is an excellent match.

FelixFelix · 18/10/2014 16:50

I'm only 24 but I have noticed in the past couple of years I've become very pale. The Vichy foundation I bought when I was 20 was far too pale at first then I've had to stop using it in the past year or so as the exact same shade is very orange on me. It's weird!

enormouse · 18/10/2014 18:14

Hi Felix, (how are you btw? I must post on the January thread soon)
I had the colour match done after an awful experience at a bobbi Brown counter and now use the very light coverage one in deeply honey.
I have facial ezcema and it doesn't aggravate it at all and is as good a match as the Mac one I used before

KristinaM · 18/10/2014 19:03

Yes , they said I was warm and in fact I'm very cool

They then recommended lipsticks like coral and rust which looked truly shocking on me
