Discount codes and exchanges

If you buy an item of clothing using a discount code and you need to exchange to size up/down, same item, same colour, just different size, do you expect the discount code to be applied to the exchange?

I take the item back to a shop instead of posting it back. The shop will just swap it over. If you post it back you usually get a refund and have to rebuy it so you've lost your discount.
