Mascara recommendations?

Could you tell me what your favourite reasonably priced mascara is? I've just run out of a quite generous Clinique sample and I loved it, but am too skint to buy one. What I liked about it was its non-clumpiness, actual lengthening powers and (most of all), the fact that it didn't budge or crumble down my face but came off completely when I wanted it to.

I've tried a few Bourjois, Maybelline and Max Factor ones and they either end up flaking during the day or leaving me panda eyed after removal.

Could anyone recommend anything good for under a tenner?

Have you tried Max Factor 2000 Calorie mascara? I always go back to it.

I get seduced by the ads for new mascaras, buy them, use them for a few days and realise that they're not as good as the Max Factor 2000 Calorie one.

I do have long eyelashes though so I don't know if it's particularly lengthening but it doesn't flake or clump.

I like Benefit's They're Real. I tried Too Faced's Better Than False Eyelashes mascara but even though the result was great, the fibres irritated my eyes.

Lancome's Doll Eyes is very good too.

nicola44 · 08/10/2014 22:41

Superdrug "B" mascaras are very good. They are about £8-9, and are the sort that you wash off with warm water. You definitely don't get panda eyes with it!

There are some really cheap ones in superdrug that are surprisingly good, I think it's called lash boom by MUA I can't be bothered to check my make up box upstairs I think it was £3. It comes in a fat purple tube, I know that much.

WeAreGroot · 08/10/2014 23:00

It's a Bourjois one so you may already have tried it but I really like their Volume Glamour Ultra Curl mascara.

I readily admit I'm not much of a make up expert (only really wear it on nights out) but I love that one. It goes on nicely, stays put and comes off easily enough when I can be bothered to remove it properly

flightywoman · 08/10/2014 23:05

Benefit They're Real for me too. I can honestly say it has changed my daily life - I bought it over 3 years ago, and since then I have worn make-up to work every day and removed it every day - I've only gone to bed with it on once in 3 and a half years! I rediscovered my love of make-up and have become obsessed with Urban Decay eyeshadow palettes.

It caused a little revolution in my life!

You do need a good remover though and the Lancome one is very effective.

Branleuse · 08/10/2014 23:06

honestly, buy another clinique one. They do the best mascara by far. I think mascara and foundation its worth spending more on, whereas most other makeup can get away with cheap

Branleuse · 08/10/2014 23:07

benefit for real gave me terrible panda eyes when i had the sample they gave out in a mag last year.

paneer · 08/10/2014 23:10

For those who love Benefit They're Real what is it about it that you love?

I bought it recently and find it really hard to apply (super short lashes), although it does have staying power.

MeganChips · 08/10/2014 23:14

For high street mascara, I don't think you can beat L'Oreal. I always go back to telescopic and I'm currently also liking their Butterfly Wings one.

Both are really lengthening, easy to remove and stay put and my eyes water a lot.

MeganChips · 08/10/2014 23:15

I do like They're Real but find it dries up really quickly.

SofaCanary · 09/10/2014 02:39

L'Oreal Voluminous - an oldie but a goodie.

Jacksmania · 09/10/2014 05:14

Just out of curiosity, what was the Clinique one called? Do they have several types? Which one was it that you liked?

AgentCooper · 09/10/2014 08:25

So many ideas here, thank you everyone!

I may have to give the MUA one a test drive before splashing out on anything else, thanks for the tip, chocolate

Jacks, the Clinique mascara was High Impact and I loved it. Now that it's done, I went back to my tubes of Maybelline Great Lash and Max Factor 2000 Calorie but just found they wouldn't stay put during the day while they were murder to get off at night.

I was very disappointed with the Benefit one - can't believe I fell for the hype.

I like the Givenchy one though it is a pain to remove as there is a lot of pigment so you wake up looking like Alice Cooper.

poorbuthappy · 09/10/2014 08:36

I buy the £1 1 from Primark! It's great value for money.

WanderingTrolley1 · 09/10/2014 08:39

I find the Rimmel mascaras very good.

Whippet81 · 09/10/2014 08:42

I can't fault the pink one from Maybelline - I mainly use MAC and Benefit for other stuff but I've never found a mascara as good and it's £4.99.

To be honest though I don't get the mascara hype although I have quite long curly natural lashes - but they all seem to do the same job to me.

FrenchPooCrisis · 09/10/2014 08:45

I bought a no7 Extreme Length (dark purple one) from Boots because I got a £5 voucher and it is really really good, it gets mixed reviews on the website but I've never had clumping and I have a habit of rubbing my eyes and it doesn't smudge unless you are really rough - it is also easy to remove.

I hated the Benefit one and stuck to great lash for years but actually prefer the boots one - my mum loves the Clinique one that is tear proof..

imustbepatient · 09/10/2014 10:07

Another vote for the Boots No 7 range. And I say that as:

A) a mascara junkie (pale-ish long but thin lashes means I've been wearing it daily since about 17!) who has tried almost all mascaras in the hunt for a holy grail one

B) someone who doesn't actually like much else from the boots no 7 range (although maybe I will have to starting trying it out again...)

I was so impressed when I tried it earlier this year and haven't used anything else since. I get their navy one after having my colours done and it is great. It thickens, lengthens, doesn't clump and stays in place but comes off easily with my normal oil cleansing routine.

Happy days.

AgentCooper · 09/10/2014 17:33

I like the sound of the No 7 range, imustbepatient - any particular recommendation?

Do not buy Collection Big Fake Curls that got a score of 9.5 out of 10 in a Daily Mail review (ad?).
It is crapola - very difficult to use.
It's like throwing a fiver in the bin - wasting my money like that. Hmm

Branleuse · 09/10/2014 19:23

have a look in TKmaxx. Sometimes they do good makeup in the toiletries bit.

I got an elizabeth arden mascara from there for about £7 and its very good. Doesnt smudge under the eyes

imustbepatient · 09/10/2014 23:37

AgentCooper I have the Intense Volume one.
