Nail varnish that goes on without streaking?

Am just getting back into wearing nail varnish again. I want something under £7 that goes on smoothly, evenly and without streaking. Just bought some Essie and loved the colour (sort of a matt whitey/pink but it went on all streaky and I found it hard to apply. Any recommendations please?

I like Topshop. It goes on nicely and there's a good range of colours.

OPI is excellent , although it will set you back more .

Ive also substituted with boots no 7 gel effect - it's a good runner up.

Models own, in particular the gel range.
Also barry M is pretty good. i find Essie to be crap, quite honestly.

I was going to say Essie before reading your post. I have found Rimmel and OPI good too.

I find most look uneven on the first coat, then the next coat evens it all out. Essie is slightly self-levelling and settles nicely as it dries.

Are you using a base coat, two coats of polish and a top coat?

meltedmonterayjack · 05/10/2014 21:22

Thanks for these. Yes I'm using base, 2 coats of polish and a top coat msfreud. I made a really bugger of applying the essie though. Maybe because it was a matt finish made it trickier to do nicely, I don't know. I'm off into town tomorrow so will check out No7, Models Own and Topshop.

Another vote for opi

Nail Polish Direct is a good site - OPI and China Glaze much lower than rrp, free p&p, and loads of brands and shades. No affiliation, but I've ordered from them a couple of times.

Fubsy · 05/10/2014 21:44

Also AEngland - lovely shades and formula. Normally £9 but each month there is one shade reduced to £6, and quite frequent sakes. Only online, but free delivery.

Thanks for that Fubsy. Will take a look.

Keep the Essie cool and really shake it. If it's streaky just add another coat. Opi is my fave

I bought a couple of Maybelline ones yesterday and a top coat. They were buy two and get one free. Lush colours that went on well.

Another vote for Opi. The pro ones from Rimmel and Maybelline are good and no.7 can be good too.

meltedmonterayjack · 05/10/2014 22:26

Oh wow. I don't know where to start first now :) Thanks all.

I'm wearing MUA which is £1 from Superdrug. Not streaky at all.

If you are using sheer, pale colours like pale pinks then they do all streak unless applied right.
Use a more opaque, ridge filling base coat first. That will mean you see the streaks less. Apply the polish in thin, even coats. Just stroke each nail 3 time per coat. Give each coat a long time to dry and make sure you use topcoat. Practise makes perfect with application. I use OPI and pale colours will streak if applied wrong. With most sheer polishes you need at least 3 coats of polish.
