Hair ideas for a graduation?

It's my graduation next month (a psychotherapy qualification, no gowns to wear or anything like that) and I'd like to do something special with my hair as it's a bit of a chance to see people I haven't seen since July and hopefully look great...

I haven't been to the hairdressers for "special occasion hair" for about 15 years and have no idea what I would like.

My hair is long-ish (nearly armpit length) and fine but I have lots of it. I tend to wear it either up on a quick bun or down, slightly wavy. I think having it up looks quite sophisticated on me and also tends to stay looking good better whatever the weather and so on.

Is there a stylish up-do I could learn to do myself or one I could ask a hairdresser for? Needs to look good but not too done because this is not a super glamorous event. Have been planning to wear a knee length dress probably with a jacket and heels/heeled boots.
