Best silhouette for a 42 year old bride?

What shape and style of dress is best for someone of 42? I'll tell you some details.

Getting married in Summer in Oz (2015)

Wedding will be either on the beach or in inlaw's garden. Relaxed affair with about 70 people.

I am currently a size 12 on top and 14 on bottom. Would like to lose weight so I am 10 on top and 12 on bottom. There is always a disparity in my dress size as I am a pear shape. Small shoulders, small bust, small waist and flat stomach but wider hips and thighs.

What style? I love vintage look things but think I'm a bit geriatric to do a full skirted 50s style dress.

I really like 40s style and 30s too....don't really want white but would if the dress was right...maybe cream though? I don't knoooooowwww! I'm not great at clothes.

DH is only an inch or two bigger than me (I am 5.6) so I don't want massive heels either as I will look clompy next to him.

But I eat a lot. When I want and what I want really. If I stopped that and carried on excersising surely I can be a ten again? I'm a 12 on top now...but a 14 on the bottom.

This is gorgeous but a budget blower

And here's the thing...for 110 pounds I can afford to change my mind when it gets closer! Grin But I COULD do it if I wanted to.

animals aw thanks but they;'re all too traditional for what I need. We're having a very informal wedding. Possibly in a garden. And I think I'm going with Velvets link. Flowers

I now want a beach wedding to wear that last dress. Maybe DH will want a vow renewal somewhere sunny unlikely

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 13:14

I'm a similar shape to you and may I suggest a gold halterneck with empire waistline? Skirts skims the hips and flat tum means empire waist hangs nicely down the front. You could have any length with that and even consider cotton or lighter organza-type fabrics. You might have to get it made if you don't find it, but that shouldn't be too difficult on your budget.

I think gold would be great with pale skin and dark hair and it's not white or cream... though you could wear pearls with it if you fancied.

Re shoes, I can't recommend enough that you go to a ballroom dancing outfitters (eg on Drury Lane in London) and get some made to measure for about £70. You can dance all day and night in them and they'll fit perfectly, plus you can get a colour to match your dress...

Congratulations!

Kept thank you very much but no. I'm going with that one from Asos. I have worn similar shapes and know they look good when I'm optimum weight...In fact I have a navy one in my wardrobe which is lovely when it bloody fits! Grin I will end up barefoot in all likelyhood anyway so shoes I can't go all the way to London for unfortunately!

Have a look at the Phase Eight Wedding Boutique page.

There are a couple of lovely gowns with high fronts and none are frumpy or flouncy.

I want to buy one now and wear it around the house.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 13:27

Noooooooo! I wont'! Grin I'm done! Done! I tell you! I can't abide shopping for frocks. I'll order the one I've seen and if it's all wrong I will order another nearer the time! I am dreading being the focus of attention as it is.

I think I'll wear me jeans. Grin

Good choice. That ASOS one is gorgeous.
I hope it's just as lovely in RL!

hellsbellsmelons · 01/10/2014 14:31

You mentioned Audrey Hepburn look and THIS was linked on another wedding thread.

tethersend · 01/10/2014 16:44

Just in case, I saw this and thought of you.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 16:51

Oh stop it! Grin Those are both stunning but hells I reckon I'm too old for that frock...it's too....I don't know...flirty? Fun? I could see someone of under 30 in it....tethers I like that but I don't like the bustline on it....

hellsbellsmelons · 01/10/2014 16:54

Wow that's nice tethers but I still really like the ASOS vintage look one.

tethersend · 01/10/2014 19:46

Agree bells, the vintage look one is better.
