Best silhouette for a 42 year old bride?

What shape and style of dress is best for someone of 42? I'll tell you some details.

Getting married in Summer in Oz (2015)

Wedding will be either on the beach or in inlaw's garden. Relaxed affair with about 70 people.

I am currently a size 12 on top and 14 on bottom. Would like to lose weight so I am 10 on top and 12 on bottom. There is always a disparity in my dress size as I am a pear shape. Small shoulders, small bust, small waist and flat stomach but wider hips and thighs.

What style? I love vintage look things but think I'm a bit geriatric to do a full skirted 50s style dress.

I really like 40s style and 30s too....don't really want white but would if the dress was right...maybe cream though? I don't knoooooowwww! I'm not great at clothes.

DH is only an inch or two bigger than me (I am 5.6) so I don't want massive heels either as I will look clompy next to him.

or with sleeves?

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 09:59

Tethers they are both gorgeous....I couldn't get away with the long one I don#t think.

*Heavenly Vintage Brides are gorgeous but you have to visit her studio and they're very expensive. I suppose I could get one made...inspired by them!

COAST have some lovely dresses as well.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 10:52

Thanks Hells! They do! I forgot about Coast and I've always found nice dresses in there in the past. I like this one as it's so simple...there's also a nice wiggle looking one but it's a bit shiny perhaps.

SIMPLE and pretty

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 10:58

It is nice that one but a bit much for a wedding that's outdoors...and I don't really want long because South Oz is VERY hot.

£££ but I love the shape

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 11:42

Thanks Tethers again I like all of those but the FC one is too UN bridal....looks more like a party dress to me...the 2nd one looks like I will be hot...and the third too non bridal.x

sequins, might be a bit hot though.

allmycats · 01/10/2014 11:45

I would go for the audrey hepburn type look - highish boat neckline, sleeveless fitted bodice and flared skirt. perhaps you could have a local dressmaker make one for you then you can choose the fabric and tweek it to your taste.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 11:46

What do you think of the Coast one I linked to earlier? allmy yes I love boatnecks...what do you also think of the coast one I linked to a few posts up? I think it would be bit longer on me...I'm 5.6

OP posts:
ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 11:47

this one

OP posts:
tethersend · 01/10/2014 11:49

It's not my sort of dress, but it's not my wedding! If you love the coast one, get it Smile

two tone

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 11:53

Why is it not your sort? I won't be offended...I want critical! Grin

madeofkent · 01/10/2014 11:56

claps that looks ideal.

tethersend · 01/10/2014 11:57

Well for me, it's just not 70s enough Grin

Aside from that, I think it's a bit nondescript. Good for a garden party, not for a wedding. But I still say if you love it, get it.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 11:58

kent I thought so...I know that shape looks good on me...I think the lace is quite delicate and pretty....it's a simple sort of wedding too...very "homespun" and some big formal dress will be a bit odd....I can have beautiful shoes and something lovely on my head...(DD in all probability!) and I'll have hair etc done proffesionally....also..I like the price! Cheap!

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 11:58

I also thought about adding a belt..to make it look more tailored.

OP posts:
ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 12:00

tethers I think the lace is quite nice though and with a hairdo and some frou frou and flowers it will be bridal....I look bad in 70s style owing to figure! 50s is far more flattering on me.

This is LOVELY
IN PINK?
I always think JV Dresses are for older people but this is rather nice
CUTE??

hellsbellsmelons · 01/10/2014 12:05

I like the coast one you have linked to.
I do think it will look much better on a size 12 type shape than it does on that model.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 12:10

That pink is gorgous! I don't like the JV one at all....I think it's quite matronly...maybe not on the model but I feel I might look like my Mum in it Grin
