Getting a knit dress altered?

I have a lovely cashmere dress but unfortunately, it has lost its shape near the bottom hem. I was thinking of getting it shortened into a tunic or long jumper. Has any one ever had this done or would it just unravel? Any ideas?

If you find a knitter they can cut the wool, unravel it & then reknit the bottom (ie create a hem) at the length you want.
