Would you rather be under or overdressed?

I'm going to a dance tonight. It's to celebrate a big occasion but the people and location aren't fancy.

I have two choices of dress. A silk bias cut maxi from monsoon which is definitely an evening dress, although on the more casual end of the scale. It has a bit of sparkle and thin spaghetti straps. Mainly black with a pink and silver pattern. It's much nicer than it sounds, is probably my most favourite dress I've ever owned. I don't get much opportunity to wear it but suspect it will be too much for tonight compared to what everyone else is wearing. I would dress it down a bit with flat sandals.

My other option is a cotton jersey maxi dress, again with flat sandals. Dark purple background colour with pink and lilac print. It's a nice dress, very flattering, wrap front with short sleeves, but it's a casual day dress, although nicer than my usual casual wear iyswim. I feel a bit dressed up when I wear it but other, more stylish, people would wear it round the shops.

Which one would you go for?

First, dressier option sounds way nicer x go for it

BitOutOfPractice · 06/09/2014 18:11

First. Always rather be over than under dressed. Always. Have fun

Liveinthepresent · 06/09/2014 18:13

Definitely over. I would wear the first one if you love it and will feel good in it.

MilkThistle187 · 06/09/2014 18:13

Wear the dress you love. Have fun!

ColdCottage · 06/09/2014 18:14

Always over dressed. That way you feel fab not drab in comparison to everyone else.

Put your posh frock on and enjoy it. There are already far to few occasions to dress up.

Have fun, why not put your dancing shoes on too Wink

I go with whatever is right to mark the event (as long as it is something I am comfortable wearing). I tend to wear flats and don't wear make up or have nails done, so I'd go for the first dress. It sounds lovely and I'm jealous. Have a great time, a smile's the best thing to wear.

Oh, I intend to Cottage, that's why both options start with comfy shoes Grin

Yep always go for over dressed, looking and feeling a million dollars will give you confidence to pull it off, even if everyone else is a bit more casual.

Have fun.

Over. I prefer to look like I cared too much rather than like I didn't care enough.

ColdCottage · 06/09/2014 19:41

My dancing shoes are stilettos Wink

Hammerandnails · 06/09/2014 20:26

Over. Put your favourite dress on and enjoy! Who cares if you're overdressed.

FamiliesShareGerms · 06/09/2014 20:55

Over

And if that's your favourite one that doesn't get many outings, definitely the right choice!

SuperWifeANDMum · 06/09/2014 21:39

You should always be over dressed for every occasion. Wear the first option and have fun.

I once went to a wedding where i wore an appropriate choice and my friend was over dressed. I thought she looked amazing and I wished I'd actually gone the extra mile. Wear your snappy number and enjoy your evening!
