So what are some non-frumpy looks for AW

...that busy mums can wear, and can also be worn outside in the rain?

I looked at those others threads and basically everything including the standard trendy mum uniform was seen as frumpy. I want some examples of non-frumpiness for normal people!

briár it's only frumpy if you think it's frumpy. It's a state of mind. You'll never dress to please all of mumsnet so don't even try. My standard uniform is jeans/blouse/cardi with boots/ballet flats/converse.

I have a barbour coat for warmth and dryness in the winter and wear a north face waterproof for wet days in the summer. I've even been known to don waterproof trousers on monsoon days. Quite frankly if it's pissing down my concerns are how to get the dc to school as quickly as possible without them (and me) turning into drowned rats Grin.

It's definitely easier to look non frumpy if it's dry weather!

I quite like the tube skirt thing and say a midi plus ankle boots you won't get wet feet.

Im due some new knee boots that I'll put with a knee length tube skirt I think. I do feel frumpy though in comparison to my childless friends who are somehow cooler than me but I'd feel an idiot wearing what they do!

'Buttery' is the new 'pop of colour'

MaryWestmacott · 06/09/2014 08:32

I like "buttery" - it makes me think of cakes and biscuits and nice cosy things.

lordnoobson · 06/09/2014 08:37

I've never eaten butter and thought "hmm leathery "

HolgerDanske · 06/09/2014 08:39

I'm hungry Grin

HolgerDanske · 06/09/2014 08:40

I like the colour of that buttery skirt, I think it would go well with navy and chocolate brown.

I've decided I need to win the lottery this week.

MaryWestmacott · 06/09/2014 08:45

It's like clothes being discribed as "caramel" - I get tempted by them on the grounds that caramel just sounds yummy, thankfully, it's a colour I suit....

I do wonder that so many online retailers have stopped calling their clothes colour options by colour names, but by foodstuffs, does it work to get you buying? You know, not 'dark brown' but 'chocolate brown', not 'red' but 'berry'. A beige skirt? No, not sure I want one, but a buttery one, oh that sounds nice... Grin

Cereal0ffender · 06/09/2014 08:53

Buttery leather makes me think of butter being smeared into an old Italian lady's face

BriarRainbowshimmer · 06/09/2014 09:05

They definitely know how to make their clothes seem more appetizing to buy Mary! Also berry is a more specific shade than just red...I think.

I wonder what would look best/worst on really pale me in winter: A black coat or a camel/caramel/beige whatever one?

They're everywhere at the moment, the leather skirts. I have no desire for one as I remember them being 'huge' when I was a girl (I wasn't allowed one). I did buy my first lurex top recently, however!

I only own one pair of jeans (which haven't been worn for a couple of years) and walking and yoga trousers (which are only worn for their respective activities, though the yoga trousers have been gathering dust lately).

It's dresses for me, or skirts and tops. Not with diamonds, feel guilty for not owning any, I do have pearls but they're only for special occasions.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/09/2014 15:37

I didn't say that dresses in the daytime are ridiculous. I said I would feel daft at the weekend, in the supermarket or the library or whatever, dolled up in a dress and diamonds. I wear dresses for work quite a lot, but tbh skirts and v plain tops work better on me. I can't imagine me ever becoming the kind of person who wears diamonds.

Have been out today in 'Yummy Mummy Land' as dp calls it. I was wearing a denim mini and biker boots and was too bloody hot. The most 'mumsy' looking people wear wearing mid blue straight leg jeans, loose linen or cotton tops and either Birkenstocks or Camper-esque flat shoes. The posh teens wear wearing either skinnies and Converse or mini skirts and DMs.

MaryWestmacott · 06/09/2014 17:24

With the 'diamonds' comment, I assumed the PP meant small ones, like diamond studs, small pendent on a chain, rings, not "evening jewels" - but I could be wrong.

Personally, Im having wearing my diamond studs at all times because my toddler likes to rip at dangly earrings and she's just broken two necklaces so it's belts, scarves, rings and bracelets as my only accessories for a while...

lordnoobson · 06/09/2014 17:27

i refer you to the comment about people who wear boring same old jewellery the whole time.

it soon dates and then looks naffola

lordnoobson · 06/09/2014 17:27

and dont say its a classic. It doesnt exist

MaryWestmacott · 06/09/2014 17:30

Lordnoobson - in my experience, "classic" in terms of jewellery only works if the item in question was very expensive (as in, you'd not be surprised to find it in the Queen's jewellery box).

lordnoobson · 06/09/2014 17:31

yes. I suppose so.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/09/2014 17:32

See, I don't understand expensive jewellery at all - would rather have lots of different bits from Topshop/Accessorize/whatever than a pair of diamond studs.

lordnoobson · 06/09/2014 17:32

reemers. two words - lizzy duke

BIWI · 06/09/2014 17:33

Ah but Remus - it's even better to have lots of expensive jewellery Wink

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/09/2014 17:34

Lizzy Duke?

Nope, BIWI - I just don't get it. If it's so expensive, I'd be frightened to wear it anyway.

lordnoobson · 06/09/2014 17:36

gah- the Argos brand ( old) of jewellery) they do a lovely range of huge fuck off zirconia.

Twinklestein · 06/09/2014 17:37

The kind of A/W dresses I wear for daytime wouldn't be described as 'dolled up' - they're casual - skinny, wrap, v neck or jumper dresses.

I wear diamond studs too as it goes & my wedding rings are diamonds, aren't many women's? I never really thought of it as anything out of the ordinary.

lordnoobson · 06/09/2014 17:38

yes VERY ordinary.
