So what are some non-frumpy looks for AW

...that busy mums can wear, and can also be worn outside in the rain?

I looked at those others threads and basically everything including the standard trendy mum uniform was seen as frumpy. I want some examples of non-frumpiness for normal people!

mine are older too.

ouryve · 05/09/2014 20:07

You'd probably have more options if you didn't fret about what some people saw as "frumpy" and wore what you actually liked wearing.

BriarRainbowshimmer · 05/09/2014 20:09

Yeah...maybe I should let loose my inner crazy bohemian

Hahaha I know. You have to be very young and/or very slim to carry off that look...

I honestly think unless you're a proper fashionista and devoted to fashion in the sense that you will wear whatever's trendy, that you're better off just wearing what you like personally like and feel comfortable in. As long as it's well put together and fits and isn't too old for your age (unless that's part of the look), and you've done something with your hair and have picked a couple of items that reflect current trends, you won't look frumpy.

JustALittleBitLost · 05/09/2014 20:12

I love both those skirts, Holger. Think you will look fab with brogues and jumper. A mum at school was doing a similar thing with a leopard pencil skirt the other day and it looked great.

tethersend · 05/09/2014 20:12

I wear my leather skirt to work. And it's wipe clean, so great for toddler smears Grin

Bolger, have you see the M&S burgundy one? Panelled, but cheaper...

tethersend · 05/09/2014 20:13

I'd look like a sack of spuds in that get up, but I'm pleased that sensible footwear seems to be trendy again.

HolgerDanske · 05/09/2014 20:15

Hmmm no I haven't! Might have a look. Although that would be worse because then I might try to convince myself that I can afford it...

Awww thanks justalittlebitlost. As long as I don't look a complete idiot I'll be happy Smile

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 05/09/2014 20:16

Oh good grief ... I just saw £149 being 'cheaper' ... I was thinking £19.99 Blush ...

tethersend · 05/09/2014 20:17

CheapER than £300 odd- not cheap Grin

HolgerDanske · 05/09/2014 20:22
Grin

Lucky for me that's still over budget. My credit card lives to fight another day!

Leather skirts are actually practical?! I kind of want one now...but wow so expensive.

Still wondering who on earth those slappers in the pic up thread are??

MaryWestmacott · 05/09/2014 21:17

poly - I think those were the Loose Woman presenters on a night out, but I haven't actually watched it in years, so I might be wrong...

MaryWestmacott · 05/09/2014 21:29

It's hard actually, I'm feeling like I need some inspiration for something other than "skinny jeans, ankle boots and boatneck long sleeve t-shirt" look I end up wearing - but all the websites I like still seem to be doing 'lookbooks' for the summer. Anyone got good links to what I should be doing for AW?

I'm liking wide legged trousers, but I fear they are a little too mumsy on me, and never really know what to put on the top half to be warm - if I go to jumpery, I think I'll look a bit to wide all over, and being short, rather like a square and/or like a small child who's been bought clothes "you'll grow into".

MaryWestmacott · 05/09/2014 21:31

Holger - i really liked the jumper with the leather skirt.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/09/2014 21:32

If I wandered round in a loose fitting floral dress, calf length sports socks and pool sliders people would give me a wide berth I reckon.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/09/2014 21:33

I saw a lot of bright, young things all in tube skirts today. I think tube skirts might be in, possibly with brogues.

Cereal0ffender · 05/09/2014 21:37

I will be mostly wearing leather shorts and carrying a copy of 'architecture au'jourd hui'

Comito · 05/09/2014 21:40

I bought a gorgeous buttery coloured leather pencil skirt from M&S last week which had £50 off. Normally I'd avoid leather skirts like the plague but it was so nice I couldn't resist. Am imagining wearing it with a black slash neck top and boots.

HolgerDanske · 05/09/2014 21:53

Have you got a link?

TEACUP123 · 05/09/2014 21:57

I have some nice winter dresses/skirts, but I rarely wear them, as I walk a lot and then I need to wear comfortable boots and a waterproof coat - which only go with jeans.
I think that shoes define the whole outfit: if you wear trainers/casual boots you have to make the whole outfit casual, and if you have smart shoes, than you'll probably wear smarter clothes as well...
I cleared out my wardrobe recently and realized that I only wear 1/3 of my clothes most of the time. As I have 3 small children and work from home, nice dresses, silk blouses etc. remain in the closet.
So watching this thread with interest: I want to be non-frumpy but I also need practical outfits!

MaryWestmacott · 05/09/2014 22:37

I think I'm going to need some links - I keep seeing lots if lovely office wear id look fabulous in but I'm a sahm now. Lots of the things I like wouldn't work without a heel...
