Help me find some 'New York walking shoes'

Hi S&B experts, hope you can help. Off to NY for 4 days, walking a lot. My usual style is smart casual so would normally wear skinny jeans, knee length boots and layered knits type things in autumn/winter time. Was planning on a nice pair of ankle boots and have ordered 2 pairs (links to follow) but my mates think I'm being stupid and think I should go down the Converse/Vans route (I'm usually of the view that pumps should only be worn by kids and trainers belong in the gym!). I'm also a bit conscious that my feet look big in these type of things. But today I've tried on pair of white, leather Converse high tops and have also seen some Ash Virgins on here, both of which are swaying me a bit. I want black, grey or navy leather, no cloth, no sued. Can I have your advice as I don't want to look unstylish or a plonker in the big apple. I'm 44, shoe size 5-6, 5ft 4, clothes size 10-12. Will post links to the stuff in a minute as my links keep failing.

I have just got the new balance. I have some nike trainers ( leisure rather than sport ) I wear for school trips and summer walks etc. Nice blue to match jeans.

Petal02 · 05/09/2014 18:54

mucho I love your Dune Lutney suggestion.

SwedishEdith · 05/09/2014 18:59

The reviews of the Dune ones are a bit hit and miss re comfort

cerealqueen · 05/09/2014 19:14

Converse aren't cushioned enough for a day of sight seeing.

The most comfortable shoes I have for walking about are

[[http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gola-Classics-Harrier-Trainers-Burgundy/dp/B00INKRLZG/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1409940642&sr=8-7&keywords=suede+gola+trainers+womens these, size up as they come up small or order two sizes)

Or these

like walking on air

Both stylish too, IMHO!

cerealqueen · 05/09/2014 19:16

Messed links up!!

trainers

flip flops

Petal02 · 05/09/2014 19:22

I've got the Crocs wedge flip flops - great for round the pool, but definitely not for any serious walking!

mathanxiety · 05/09/2014 19:47

I wouldn't wear the Dune slip ons in NY tbh. People would really only wear shoes like that to the beach or gardening in the US, if they were far younger than 40s.

butterfliesinmytummy · 05/09/2014 20:46

Agree, slip on skater shoes are not popular in the USA....

No point buying new shoes, just wear what you would for a day out in the uk....

lordnoobson · 05/09/2014 21:11

They are terrible full stop

littlewhitebag · 06/09/2014 10:42

My super stylish 16 yo has always eschewed trainers and looked down her nose at them. Then she got a summer job which involved being on her feet, outside all day and he feet became very sore and blistered. She bought these and they have never been off her feet. They are low key but super comfortable and once worn in a bit look less resolutely white!

AngieM2 · 06/09/2014 17:30

Just coming back with an update. Went to the big city today and found these things of beauty www.kurtgeiger.com/women/shoes/trainers/last-nude-leather-37-carvela-kurt-geiger-shoe.html didnt buy them as i kept thinking back to all the negatives on here mainly aimed at converse about the flatness not being good but they are definately going on my birthday/xmas list (am also going to keep an eye out for a discount code).

I actually ended up with these www.6pm.com/skechers-gratis-in-motion-black-white. Got them from the skechers shop but this is the only image i can find online. They are so much nicer in real life, fit like a glove, feel like you're walking on air, and look surprisingly stylish which was always at the top of my tick list. Once again, thanks everyone.

I too have been persuaded to but trainers for something other than exercise for the first time in 30 odd years.

I don't want to be thinking about my feet instead of enjoying myself. So thanks from me too and apologies for hijacking out thread slightly Angie. I really like the look of those too.

Coumarin · 06/09/2014 17:34

*buy

lordnoobson · 06/09/2014 17:37

you chose well. the nude ones look like Barbies feet. yuck

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/09/2014 17:38

Quite like those black trainers. Don't like the nude ones - they'd be filthy in less than a week around here.

SwedishEdith · 06/09/2014 17:43

I think I saw someone wearing those skechers the other day. I did a double take to see what the make was because the shape of them caught my eye. So good choice. Were there any other colours?

littlewhitebag · 06/09/2014 17:55

Good choice. You will not regret buying them. Enjoy NY.

AngieM2 · 06/09/2014 18:09

Boo lord and remus for things of beauty I'd be happy to wipe them every day with a baby wipe, they look really nice on. No problem coumarin sounds like we have similar opinions. swedish not sure about other colours as I specifically wanted something that would go with all outfits so only looked at black. They also had a skechers go walk flexi I think it was called and the back of it can be flopped down to wear as a slip on. Nearly got those but they weren't a plain black.

Panzee · 06/09/2014 18:21

Good call on rejecting the Geigers, they don't look comfy enough.

Coumarin · 06/09/2014 18:30

Grin at "barbie's feet"

thebluehen · 06/09/2014 18:41

My dp wore imitation toms and said they were so comfy. I wore converse and my feet and legs really hurt like never before.

Go for comfort, not style.

mathanxiety · 08/09/2014 00:55

The Skechers will be great in NY. Hope you have a ball.
