Benches not bags

Thoughtfully starting a thread for those who believe bags are a waste of money. Can they be an object of style and beauty? How many benches are obscene?

Im not sure i understand? Benches???????
As for bags being a waste of money...well it depends on how much a person spends on one. For me...i would personally hesitate at anything that is £200 or over. Even £100 and over for a bag. You can get some perfectly nice bags for cheaper...and leather too. As for paying thousands...really, i think its ridiculous and personally an obscene waste of money..regardless of income, but thats my point of view and you asked for it. I have been on other threads about this topic and am wary..but there you go. Ive said it.

Sorry, I meant to garner views on benches. As an alternative to bags. Not quite clear now I read back. Benches have been put forward in this section regularly as a worthier use of funds than handbags. Perhaps there is a travel bench or chair with a bag attached which would make everybody happy.

ZaraW · 30/08/2014 10:46

The OP is referring to a notorious S&B thread where, IIRC, the op had been left a sum if money by a relative and wanted to spend it on a bag that she would treasure for years to come and which would remind her of the relative.

It was proposed by some posters on the thread that it would be better to spend the money on a bench in a park as a memorial.

This is why benches are always brought up on expensive bag threads.

TSSDNCOP · 30/08/2014 11:50

Beauty is in the eye of the bagholder. I am the owner of two benches and several bags that would make some MNers froth.

All I can tell you is the benches require sanding/cleaning/staining and all for a hard seating experience that fucks up my back.

My bags do not. And they carry all my stuff in a convenient manner. And their handles tend not to drop off.

Bags win over bench.

Floisme · 30/08/2014 12:06

I missed this legendary thread although it does sound hilarious and bonkers in equal measure. The trouble is, the bench line is now trotted out whenever anyone so much as questions whether a Fendi Peekaboo really is the eighth wonder of the world. It's starting to feel less like a joke and more like code for 'shut the fuck up.'

MilkThistle187 · 30/08/2014 12:13

That thread did degenerate into a lot of bitchness, as bag threads often do around here

LoveVintage · 30/08/2014 12:55

I would not judge someone if they want to spend hundreds of pounds on a bag, but I don't really get it, and would rather buy a bench any day. Each to their own.

Greengardenpixie · 30/08/2014 13:10

Well actually on reflection i dont agree with spending on either using ridiculous sums of money. Give it to charity...do something in a non materialistic way. Dedicate a star...something small. Surely the purpose of remembering need not be done in such an expensive way. My point is, there are other ways...a bench??? Plant a tree!!! That does two things, help the environment and you have something real to tend too.

Greengardenpixie · 30/08/2014 13:10

..oh and it will grow and you can remember that person.

Or I guess you could just get some expensive boots?

Greengardenpixie · 30/08/2014 17:39

yawn

Greengardenpixie · 30/08/2014 17:41

oh and it wasnt me that started the thread. What actually is the point in resurrecting it i have no idea as it seems to really cause quite a lot of aggrivation!

AmberNectarine · 30/08/2014 17:42

I suspect the thread was started in jest....

madammecholet · 30/08/2014 17:45

I like to put my expensive bags on benches. They look pretty. Does that count? Grin

Floisme · 30/08/2014 19:51

MFIC thank you for linking to the famous bench thread! I have so say though, having heard so much about it, I now feel slightly cheated. I did a rough count and spotted about 12 dissenting posts over the course 8 pages - where is all the bitching and frothing I was promised? Grin Seriously, why all the outrage just because a few posters disagreed?
