Grey .... Don't think I can do it .....

So I haven't dyed my hair since February and I've had it cut short in a cool pixie cut so I have about 5 inches of grey roots and light ends.

I am 41 but feel so old with my grey hair, I don't think I can keep it up. I catch sight of myself in the mirror and wonder who the old lady is! I've been trying with make up, lipstick etc but I can't reconcile it all and I don't feel good about myself. I actually went and bought some hair dye today. Maybe I'm just not ready? Anyone else done a u turn on this?

I like it. Don't cave, you almost there!

I also have 4 or 5 inches of grey but I have about 4 or 5 inches of dark brown below. If I suited short hair I'd cut it in a flash - I'm just slowly waiting for it to grow. Each time I feel like giving up and getting out the hair dye I remind myself that at some stage I will have to go through this again - no way am I letting the past 7 months of crap hair be for nothing!

Your hair hair looks great short and the edgy cut means the grey looks good, not old and frumpy. Agree that you could play about with some ashy highlights - have fun with it. If you go back to dying it dark brown you will be back to the dark, blocky colour and the roots every 2 weeks! Speaking from experience here! Grin

I love Judi Dench but the thought of looking like her fills me with fear!

Butterflies you really suit short hair and I think the colour is almost there too Have you tried Aveda blue malva t really makes a difference without dye

Eek, you're all so nice, I'm swithering again.

Kahu, it's exactly the blocky colour that I hated about dyeing my hair, and it only really looked good for a couple of weeks until the roots showed again. I've always dyed it myself, maybe I should go for a colour consultation. It's not pink, that must be the light.

Also, I have a confession, I cut it myself. I used thinning shears on this to get a really choppy look. It's not difficult and the back is done with a mixture of feel and two mirrors. I used to cut my hair for years when I was younger and my hairdresser wouldn't cut it shorter than a jaw length bob style.

Maybe I'll look for a really good colourist and book a consultation for some cool ashy tones.

Noddy I bought Pantene silver shampoo which is dark blue and keeps the tone cool. Also Pravana Chromasilk dye in silver all over to keep the ends from being brassy. Does make a difference.

Saw your photo. You look so nice! Great haircut. It's all psychological, though, if you feel more your age with coloured hair, do it!

noddyholder · 27/08/2014 18:50

I agree its how you feel personally. I think you would look amazing dark with your eyes but grey also suits you so you are lucky!

Oh no OP, you look fab! You CAN do it.

From your description I had a completely different image.
Stick with it, it's actually really edgy and you still don't look your age.
