Winter capsule wardrobe

flux500 · 23/08/2014 10:23

I tried to do a summer capsule wardrobe and got it half right. I went for a few items that were indulgent and beautiful but hardly worn

So I think I need help for winter. Has anyone started their winter capsule wardrobe and if so what's in it so far? Has anyone done a previous winter capsule wardrobe and can tell me what items were godsend and which didn't work out?

Or

Has anyone seen something they just know will be a good buy for winter? Like one iconic item.

Thanks :)

I have no idea what's in or out etc but in A/W I tend to rely on:
skinny jeans in black, grey and indigo (I have khaki too but find them much harder to wear),

jumpers in black, grey and navy

boots - ankle (flat and heeled) and knee length (flat) - in brown and black

biker jackets / peacoat / proper warm parka for the coldest days

opaques and denim/tube skirts

lots of scarves!

If I was buying just one thing for winter right now, my choice would be a huge tartan scarf.

Actually, I think I might take out a top and a bottom and and put in another dress.

flux500 · 23/08/2014 12:55

Remus that's a good list I think I almost forget to include but versatile shoes/boots and then my outfits just kind of crumble!

Molly I love the sound of project 333 I've not heard if it - I'm guessing you have to have the 33 things that all go with each other? What happens if you can't find one of the items? Just interested to see if this will work for me :)

I'm going super minimal this year having chucked out most of my wardrobe.

  1. Loafers
  2. Chelsea Boots
  3. Other leather ankle boot with heel
  4. Rain boots
  1. Jersey blazer
  2. Military jacket in olive
  3. Warm parka
  4. Rain coat
  5. Chunky cardigan
10. Denim jacket
  1. 5 short dresses to wear with tights (inc 1 denim dress)

  2. 2 maxi dresses (heavyweight & suitable for winter)

  3. Indigo jeans

  4. Black jeans

  5. Boyfriend distressed jeans

  6. 5+ long sleeve casual tops

I'm a SAHM so don't need a work wardrobe. Obviously lots of scarves and jewellery and thick tights. Still working on special occasion wear and going out outfits.

Check out the blogs Into Mind and Unfancy Blog. I've found both really helpful.

My work wardrobe varies little from season to season tbh. Tends to be a skirt or dress plus jacket, but in winter I wear opaques and layers, and in summer the jackets are lighter-weight and the tights are nude hold ups.

CoconutAmericano · 23/08/2014 14:55

I will be wearing:

Grey/blue/black skinny jeans (Cos, Vero Moda)
Blue boyfriend jeans (Vero moda, m&s)

Black leather ankle boots (Vagabond)
Black wedge trainers (Ash)
Brogues (clarks)

Merino wool/cashmere sweaters (Cos)

Cotton shirts in blue and grey for under my shorter sweaters (Cos)

Long sleeve jersey tops for layering (random)

Merino wool dresses with opaques and my brogues (Cos, Clarks)

Plain beige rainy day mac from Boden (3years old)

Grey wool overcoat (Zara)

Black thick heavy padded coat for the depths of winter (given to me by my mum)

Lots of big scarves in a variety of colours (bought everywhere and anywhere)

Samesh I just checked out those pages and was really glad I did. I think I've been doing it all wrong. I reckon I need to do the take everything out if wardrobe and only out stuff back in I wear. Haven't done that yet as was scary but I really do need to.

Coconut loved reading through your list especially the shirt with jumper over - this would work well for my every day wardrobe and I like the shirts buttoned up to the neck look as I have summer dresses like that. I might be able to look for shorter jumpers and wear over these dresses - not sure about that now I think about it, summery fabric and winter jumper might look crap.

I do have a woollen dress that I never wear as it sticks to my tights and I don't like being able to see the lines created by tights either - maybe I'm buying dresses that are too small ?!!

Thanks for all replies ladies :)

I think the jumper over shirt dresses could work Flux say wih thick opaques for the colder months.

I wear straight cut wool dresses so they dont cling to me. I like this style:

flux500 · 23/08/2014 16:10

Yeah coconut I guess it's silly to discount the jumper over dress tll I've tried it :)

That dress looks gorgeous and an amazing colour and I see why that wouldn't be clingy like mine. What footwear though? And maybe a necklace?

One good thing about my winter wardrobe is I have an awful lot of coats. I think I might have a problem with coats - buying them I mean.

I do think even with my successful effort for summer it's definitely curbed my shopaholism and that can only be a good thing :)

I would wear that dress with opaques and black brogues or ankle boots personally. I wear a lot of merino wool jumper dresses this way with my over coat over it and a big scarf. It's quite a smart but toasty warm outfit. Yes i wear long necklaces too. Something like this:

Coconut I really like that shop and I've never heard if it til now! They have lots of lovely full skirts which I am immediately drawn to but realistically are they a capsule purchase? Hmm I've noticed they have a shop in Glashow which I'm going to go to even though I am tempted to order a few items online now Grin

Their sizing is all over the place so i would definitely advise you trying on in store first Grin
