I went to the TCentre the other day and went in various different shops, but i was surrounded by cropped length tops and really short shorts and skirts.
I like the looks of the stuff on the hangers but I wouldn't get away with a cropped top, even layered.
I decided that i am too old for H&M and DP but not old enough for M&S, I would like to look stylish but I really have no idea where to look!

I am 5ft 9 and size 12/14

Thanks oh wise MN'ers :)

I'm 36 and I discovered Levi's, bloody expensive but look great. We have an outlet near us.

Zara coat

Cool brogue shoes from schuh

Red jumper from Margaret Howell/ green noa noa fluffy one from eBay

Umm get your hair, your shoes and your coat sorted and your safe !

I had a phase of not knowing how to dress for my age but I think I just realised I needed to spend more on one item like jeans and shoes and then sort my hair out. Quite happy with how I look now. Oh and a quick makeup routine, mine takes 10 mins when it used to take at least half an hour of faffing with different products.

As with others, am 34 and shop at usual high street shops - DPs, Oasis, Warehouse, H&M, odd bit from Urban Outfitters etc. No way are you to old for these!

Figster · 16/08/2014 16:37

I'm 33 and seem to be in a rut of sainsburys matalan next and primark I'm 5'10 and a 14.

Begrudge paying DP and new look prices these days a lot of it is poor quality and poor materials.

MrsAtticus · 16/08/2014 16:44

I'm a young 37 Grin, I really like la redoute

GaryShitpeas · 16/08/2014 16:49

CountBapula · 16/08/2014 17:00

I'm 36.

Jeans, khakis and other basics from Gap.

Bits and bobs (little tops etc) from H&M - using the online app makes it easier to be selective. I got a lovely cap-sleeve blouse with leaf print recently for £12.99 - looks three or four times the price. I tend to do big orders as I get most of my DSes' clothes from there too.

Then I keep an eye on the following labels/sites for sales/discounts/special offers:

Hush (perfect classy 30-something label IMO)
Great Plains
Mint Velvet, Me & Em and Baukjen (lovely but £)
Atterley Road - online boutique - has some lovely quirky Scandi labels you won't find in the shops, plus the best stuff from Whistles, Great Plains etc.

Leviticus · 16/08/2014 17:02

I'm late 30s and similar proportions to you.

H&M is good for basics, cardigans and stuff for layering.

Gap for jeans and plain tops.

Warehouse for vests and t shirts

TK Maxx for all manner of things if I have time to rummage.

I use eBay to buy barely used brands I like (Levis, Hudson, Jigsaw, Whistles).

Don't rule anywhere out, even if you rule some styles out.

I have very plain taste mind you. I tell myself I'm doing the 'French' look but it's very possible I lack imagination.

Charitygirl1 · 16/08/2014 17:06

36 - topshop, asos, Atterley road, Me & Em, River Island, New Look, Uniqlo, H&M...

poguemahon · 16/08/2014 17:08

french connection for dresses (usually from the asos sale), oasis for jeans, jumpers/knitwear hobbs or Boden, tops wherever - often Debenhams for t shirts then oasis/warehouse for going out tops.

mumtosome61 · 16/08/2014 17:17

I'm nearly 30 but got to that stage where I'm looking at shops thinking 'too young for me' so this has been really good to read. River Island is pap where I am, not sure how but it's just super super trendy and looks like C&A in the 1990's right now.

I usually get clothes from Fat Face, Red Herring (Debenhams) White Stuff (outlets), occasionally New Look and often buy staples from H&M. I'll also look in DP's and Next but don't often buy much in there. I'll always pick up something in Primark. I do have a good look in charity shops and on Ebay/internet too, and will always have a poke around Tesco/Asda/Sainsbury's.

I don't really have a big budget clothes wise. I'd love to shop at All Saints though.

callamia · 16/08/2014 17:33

I am 33 next week. I wear French Connection, Cos, some Topshop, uniqlo, Hobbs and Mango. Mainly in the sales though.

XiCi · 16/08/2014 17:45

I'm 42 and tend to shop at ASOS, Oasis, Warehouse, French Connection, Zara, River Island, DP, Mango, Ted Baker and Top shop amongst others

Floisme · 16/08/2014 17:51

Jeez if you're too old then I am screwed Grin Once you get past the crop tops, H&M normally have pretty good basics. I wouldn't rule out anywhere because of your age, I think it's more about being selective.

BoiledPiss · 16/08/2014 18:07

Thanks so much everyone, i think it's probably the case that i don't really know what I want! I get most of my sucessful items from TKMaxx when I have time to rummage.

La redoute is also one i forget about, what is the sizing like?

OP posts:
startwig1982 · 16/08/2014 18:22

I'm 32 and go to debenhams, white stuff, sea salt, joules and occasionally boden. I have a few bits from m&s, like cardigans and jumpers.

poguemahon · 16/08/2014 19:14

I've found La Redoute REALLY dodgy with sizing in the past.

Skirts that were allegedly my size but actually at least 2 sizes too big and literally fell down off me.

Have also ordered, say, a 10 and been sent a 16 (as in the label says 16 they sent the wrong item, rather than dodgy sizing).

Dontgotosleep · 16/08/2014 20:09

I'm 38.

ThisBitchIsResting · 16/08/2014 20:18

TK Maxx for tops
Online boutiques for jeans (sales in JBrand etc) also designer bags and scarves
River Island for 'trend led' bits
Hush
Office, Dune and Topshop, Shoeaholics also good for shoes and boots

Anywhere really, I don't discriminate Grin so have clothes from supermarkets and also Net a Porter bargains. Try reading some blogs and joining Pinterest to give you an idea of what style you are aiming for. I like Cos, Hush and designer stuff, can't afford it so build similar looks using cheaper shops. H and M is good for basics, spend more on shoes and bags. And a good coat. I do shop at M and S - their 5 pocket jeggings are the best skinnies for me, they don't have a big 'Marks and Sparks' label!

MrsEboJones76 · 16/08/2014 20:28

37 - very petite - 5ft and a size 6/8. My main aim when shopping is to find things that fit well which can be tricky for me:

Gap (you can get petite fit online) for jeans, chinos, knitwear, leather bags
Next for petite fit jeans, coats and dresses
Topshop for tops, dresses and jeans
Boden for petite fit dresses and jackets, knitwear and work shirts and skirts
M&S for their skinny jeans and cashmere
Clarks and Dune for shoes and boots
Hobbs NW3 for bags and shoes

ShutTheFuckUpBarbara · 16/08/2014 21:03

I get loads from La Redoute; never had any problems with sizing, especially since I have come to terms with the fact that I am now a 12/14 and trying to sqeeze back into a size 10 was pointless :)

I like H&M again since this season; I got some brilliant basics from there (chinos etc.)

Next but only for work wear.

Primark for cheap style updates, accessories, etc.

Boden for smart dresses.

Passmethecrisps · 16/08/2014 21:13

Useful thread! Thanks everyone.

I am 35 and 5ft 2 and a curvy size 10. I have recently rediscovered gap and fine myself very keen on lots of the stuff in there. I always browse oasis and really like hve concessions Apricot and Mela Loves London which are in debenhams and new look.

My current favourite things in addition to the above are asos and boden carefully chosen.

I had a wobble a few years ago and convinced myself I was too old for shorter skirts and fun print dresses but I really feel it is much more down to attitude. If you feel good in it then you will more than likely look good.

I do need to take the advice of having a few good basics. I love scarves though so I just need to work on the coat
