Do Bra Extenders Work?

I have a large band size (40) and a small cup and if I could go down to say, a 38 of even 36, I would have a much larger choice of bras.

I could use an extender to fit a 38 bra to my size, but would it work? I am worried about cup size, the space between the cups and also that the extender would set my straps too far apart, leading to embarrassing dropped strap problems.

I'm sure the bra gurus will be along in a minute but can you please just check what your measurements are using this guide: thebetterbracampaign.blogspot.co.uk/p/fitting-advice.html

The reason why I'm asking is that you may think you require a bigger band when in fact your cup size is too small.

I am 39 underneath with a very tight bra!

I seem to be in a black hole: up to 38, there is a large choice and above 44 the market starts again. But 40 to 42 in small cup sizes seems to be a bra desert!

Did you measure yourself as per the link. So 39 underneath and what is the leaning over full bust measurement?

TheJourney22 · 14/08/2014 22:16

Yes they do. When I was pregnant (ribcage extended!) I used them with my normal bras .... excellent cheap inventions SmileSmileSmileSmile

StatisticallyChallenged · 14/08/2014 22:21

It is a bit of an issue - but can you check your measurements please Smile.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 14/08/2014 22:22

Yes. I brought a smaller band bigger cup bra as instructed by the Gurus, sadly no way can I wear it all day, so it has an extender back to my usual 38.

Sorry bra people.

valerie123 · 14/08/2014 22:23

The 39 underneath is very, very tight.

Full bust over the nipples is, boasting a bit, a nice 42 plus.

I am sure that an extender to 40 or 42 would work, apart from setting my straps too wide.

And is that measurement done at 90 degrees leaning over?

StatisticallyChallenged · 14/08/2014 22:27

Should say, its really common for people to wear a band that's a bit big and a cup too small. But this isn't always obvious as the lack of cup space makes the band feel artificially tight.

Most people who measure 39 will actually wear (when fitted properly) a 38. Some even need to go smaller - depends on how squidgy your torso is!

valerie123 · 14/08/2014 22:57

Thanks, but I do measure 39 very tight leaning right over and I am convinced that a 40 back band is for me. I am still 42 over my nipples.

Once more, should I try a 38 A with extenders ?

OP posts:
StatisticallyChallenged · 14/08/2014 22:59

OH, the 39 should be standing up - just the overbust that's a leaning measurement.

A 38A will be much, much too small in the cup. Cup sizes aren't the same on different band sizes. So a 38A will not fit, no. Your measurements suggest you would need a 38C or D to accommodate your overbust measurement. By all means, try that with an extender too. But once you try the bigger cup size you probably wont need it.

StatisticallyChallenged · 14/08/2014 23:01

Sorry that should say the overbust should be standing up!

FavaBeanPyramidScheme · 14/08/2014 23:06

Good thinking OP! Yes they work really well. I also used them when pregnant.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 14/08/2014 23:13

I made one from a bra that had died to test it and it worked really well, really easy to make.
