What do people wear to weddings?

Hurr1cane · 12/08/2014 17:46

I'm never invited to any due to having no family/ having a severely autistic DS.

But my DPs brother is getting married and me and DS are invited! This is a big thing because my own family basically fucked us off because of DSs disability.

But what do I wear? I hardly have any money due to leaving teaching to care for DS. Anyone got any cheap ideas?

Need more info, when (time of year/weather) where (venue - castle, hotel, village hall) how far is it from you I.e. Does outfit need to be crease proof for long car journey

Hurr1cane · 12/08/2014 17:59

Urrm it's at the end of this month.

It's only about an hours travel so not so crease proof.

I'll be wearing my hair up with an extension clip thing.

My hair is black and I'm 5"7 and a size 10 top and 12 bottom.

Venue is a sort of posh hotel thing I think

Also, usually scruffy DP who I'd normally look brilliant next to, has a hired suit (because his brother doesn't trust him to be smart)

So I have to look decent

50's style dress with mid height heels?
A very stylish lady posted earlier about going to the races and linked a fab dress, have a look.
It looked like it would survive a car journey, and would suit end of August.

Good luck, and hope you enjoy it!

If you're short of cash, I can highly recommend searching out a 'dress agency' aka posh second hand clothes shop. I've started shopping in a friendly one near me and have got some good bargains. It's also staffed by a very stylish lady who will give sensible advice.

It's obviously a bit hit & miss, but you usually end up with something individual and a lot cheaper than brand new. And these places are pretty fussy about the condition of stuff they take.

Hurr1cane · 12/08/2014 18:29

Oh those dresses are gorgeous! Would they go with my long sleeved cardigan though?

My arms are horrendous!

This dress is only 25 pounds from H&M

With your shape and colouring I think this would look really nice.

Can team it with any plain coloured heels that you might have as the dress is a block colour. If you don't have any New Look have a great selection or shoes for good prices. Then you can buy a scarf/pashmina in the same colour as the shoes to tie outfit together and keep you warm if it gets chilly.

I would also add a facinator instead of a hat, which will stay on and be easier when running around after children.

ColdCottage · 12/08/2014 18:38

This facinator is only 10 pounds and would go with any future outfits.

How much do you have to spend?

The above suggestions would come in under 50 pounds but if you have more to spend the world is your oyster.

A maxi dress is also a good option with children and also warmer when it gets cool in the evening. If its an outdoor event you can slip some leggings on under and no one knows!

Hurr1cane · 12/08/2014 18:45

Thank you. I have about £25-30 to spend on a dress. I already have black heels and a black cardigan thing

Ooh cold, I have that dress - it would indeed be perfect to wear to a wedding, and it's really cheap but looks more expensive (nice non-shiny fabric). :)

Black shoes/cardi would do with it. And don't bother with anything on your head if you don't want to. Last few weddings I went to hats etc have been the exception rather than the norm, usually only older ladies and the mother of the bride/groom etc. Given that you're barely out of nappies I think you will gorgeous without!

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 12/08/2014 18:47

floral dress and add a long sleeved cardi from h&m (9.99) and purple shoes and bag

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 12/08/2014 18:47

Oh the black accessories would go too

Hurr1cane · 12/08/2014 19:04

I'll have to go on PClater to see colds links Smile thanks for the ideas everyone I'm so shit with these things.

Is it ok to wear see through tights with these dresses? I'm so pale that I'm see through and it's not the nicest look with leg veins

Hurr1cane · 12/08/2014 19:05

I was thinking of just having a fancy silver hairband (my hair item of choice) would that be ok? I'm excited but so nervous!

ColdCottage · 12/08/2014 19:08

Black and pink look great together.

The pink dress will really pop with your black shoes and cardi. The neckline of the pink dress will also look lovely with your hair up.

Do you have a black evening bag, if not just ask friends or colleagues as most people have one and I'm sure they will loan it to you.

If it is a venue wedding you can have the smart bag with you and keep extras in the car for children or just have then in another bag which can be left under the table or in the cloakroom.

Have fun.

ColdCottage · 12/08/2014 19:12

Yes to tights, and just tie your silver hair band in with silver jewellery.

As the pink dress has a high neckline I would just go with a chunky silver bangle. You don't need a necklace.

Have fun. Oh and pop a pair of flats in for when your feet get sore later in the day. Wedding are long and your feet will be tired by the end of the day.
