What do people wear to weddings?

Hurr1cane · 12/08/2014 17:46

I'm never invited to any due to having no family/ having a severely autistic DS.

But my DPs brother is getting married and me and DS are invited! This is a big thing because my own family basically fucked us off because of DSs disability.

But what do I wear? I hardly have any money due to leaving teaching to care for DS. Anyone got any cheap ideas?

Does that work?

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 12/08/2014 19:18

Honestly, given your budget, the fact that you won't get much opportunity to re-wear, your relative lack of interest in clothes, the chances that you'll get puked/wee'd on, and your enviably easy-to-fit size, I'd spend an hour somewhere posh with a whole bunch of charity shops. Posh frocks are normally thick on the ground. It might not work but it's definitely worth a try.

But try the H&M frock as well of course.

Hurr1cane · 12/08/2014 19:25

I've got a massive change bag Grin

I love the pink but sulks it not make me look too pale?

Oh I'm excited! I'll be sure to update with the chosen dress!

Have a fantastic time Hurr1cane. Relax and enjoy I'm sure you'll look great! I just picked up the most beautiful clothes in a charity shop - I agree there are bargains to be had

Hurr1cane · 12/08/2014 19:35

I can't imagine DS would allow me to trapse through shops :( it'll have to be an online bargain. I only just manage tesco with him now after years of training

I like the dress, have you checked the skirt length? If you're tall it looks like it will come up very short which would probably be fine for the evening but maybe not so much for the day.

I'd order a reserve outfit just in case its very short when it arrives.

mignonette · 13/08/2014 09:01

A fitted dress with a flared skirt would look lovely with a short cropped cardigan- play with textures. A fluffy angora cardigan with a satiny dress fabric looks lovely.

Add a cool pair of shoes and you are good to go.

strawberrysplit · 13/08/2014 10:33

That dress is lovely but I agree that it mignt be a little short if ds is young enough to need picking up, you'll be bending down etc....

I've got a few dresses from here (apologies don't think the link is working..)

www.lindybop.co.uk/

most of which can be dressed up or worn as a day dress in the summer with flats.

strawberrysplit · 13/08/2014 10:39

Also, you can get very cheap cropped shrugs from ebay (less than £10) I've not tried them but they come in loads of colours if you're worried about your arms - which i'm sure are fine btw!!

If you're on facebook, the lindy bop page has customer photos so you can get a better idea of what they look like on 'real' people and how others accessorise if you're unsure. :)

Hurr1cane · 13/08/2014 12:30

Ahh I didn't think about the length because I'm tall :( could I wear some shorts under it or is that a fashion disaster? I ordered a blue one that I could wear with leggings while I was there (it was super cheap) but would that be a bit too dress down? Fuck sake :(

OP posts:
Hurr1cane · 13/08/2014 12:32

It has to be a long cardigan. I have a fitted one which I wear all the time.

Honestly I'm like deathly pale. The type of pale that looks like you're some sort of zombie

Buy some rimmel fake tan make up. It washes off so no dodgy lines and also has a nice shimmer. Just wash your hands lots after.

www.chemistdirect.co.uk/rimmel-sunshimmer-instant-tan-make-up-light-matte/prd-rqp

You can get this in tesco boot etc

mignonette · 13/08/2014 13:03

Hurricane

Work that pale look and stick a really bright lipstick on. Mascara, a tiny bit of blush and you'll look glamorous. Pale is lovely too.

strawberrysplit · 13/08/2014 13:44

I'd wear shorts under it if need be, lots of people wear spanx that are really just tight shorts! just make sure they can't be seen when you're stood up etc...

Not sure about leggings to a wedding tbh, depends how formal it's going to be.

I'm also so pale i'm almost blue, sometimes I use a gradual tanner, just to make me the same shade as most people are without a tan, if I can't be bothered/don't have time I just go with it :)

TheresLotsOfFarmyardAnimals · 13/08/2014 13:57

Just in case the red is too short;

I think that the key for wedding make up is to keep it natural and simple but well done. It isn't a club night out which some people always forget.

A great blow dry on your hair is always a winner too.

atticusclaw · 13/08/2014 13:58

Personally I think that when it arrives you'll find the red dress too short for a wedding and shorts/leggings aren't really appropriate for a wedding. Not that anyone is likely to say anything but I think you'll feel uncomfortable.

Few inches above the knee is fine, halfway up your thigh, not fine.

TheresLotsOfFarmyardAnimals · 13/08/2014 14:03

I think so too atticus. I'm wearing this to a wedding in a couple of weeks www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/141367282136?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108

I think that's standard wedding guest stuff

sausagefortea · 13/08/2014 14:09

m.ebay.co.uk/itm/331282548473?nav=SEARCH

Id vote for eBay too. You'd definitely be able to get something lovely for your budget (probably more like £15-20). The above one is a size 10 coast and style which would be fine with size 12 hips. Beauty of that is you could wear with a black cardy and black shoes/bag which you may already have?

Hurr1cane · 14/08/2014 14:23

Ok so I got the dresses off boohoo. Absolutely gorgeous fabric for the price! And will look great with leggings and a big belt for when I need to look a bit smart casual. But way too short Hmm

But when I went to hang them up I found this very old dress in my wardrobe. I probably need to diet for the next two weeks because I was slimmer when I pulled it off (probably need to lose about 5lbs which is doable if I stop snacking with DS all day)

I'll upload photos that my 8 year old with severe learning disabilities took in a second. Will you tell me if it's ok?

The photos are a bit shit and it took about an hour of coaching him how to use my phone camera to do it (face it to mummy, no not that way, no loo like this, no not of Ben 10, no turn it to mummy, no so you can see mummy, no not mummy's bottom) so sorry that the photos are a bit naff

I can't wear fake tan makeup. DS doesn't like the smell. He freaks out. Hmm
