Outdoor wear for Winter

happytalk13 · 11/08/2014 06:46

I plan on getting out and about this Winter and am in need of advice on good, reliable outdoor wear.

Hunter boots - yes? no? I looked them up and have seen many complaints that the quality no longer matches the price tag. What are my other choices that are good.

Jacket - a bit stylish would be nice and for someone who has an hourglass figure. On of my children has a great jacket that has a waterproof shell and an inner fleece that can be combined or worn separately but I just don't like the style - it would make me look like a sack of potatoes.

Can you help me?

Warm outdoorsy coats are a lot more stylish than they used to be. Merrell make some good ones - the Haven and Wakefield- are beloved by S&B.

There are some ilse Jacobsen bits half price in Coggles, both rubber boots and raincoats, that are worth a look

Thank you both - the Isle Jacobsen sale is great but I want a longer boot. I like the Dubarry Clare but not the price tag - any recommendations for something similar? Will take a look at Haven and Wakefield (what/who are S&B?)

I've just taken a punt and ordered some Bean boots from the states (the 8" fleece lined ones).

Never heard of them until I randomly saw a photo on the internet of somebody wearing them but I believe they're very popular in the US.

Apparently the design has been the same for over 100 years and they get great reviews - some people have had pairs that have lasted 30 years!

Hopefully will be with me in about 3 weeks and I will give a review then.

I liked LL Bean. Didn't even occur to me to think about buying from the States!

Plummy - where did you order your boots from? The link doesn't work and LL Bean doesn't ship internationally...

I have ariat grasmere boots - amazingly comfy from day one. They've done 3 years now and still look good

I ordered them off that website, once you get to check out you can change the country to UK. Shipping time is about 2-3 weeks and costs about $40. Tis a bit pricey but hopefully it'll pay for itself if they last 30 years!

My only concern is that the sizing can be variable - a lot of reviewers have said they ordered a size down - the website has a guide on which size to go for. I've just plumped for my usual size (the sizes are US BTW but there is a conversion chart).

That's why it's a bit of a punt because sending them back will be a right pain in the neck but I think they look great so I'm prepared to give them a chance Grin

I don't like the heel
