Am I too old for this skirt? London buses print!

I'm 38. I think I know its wrong. Any thoughts please?
skirt

Ideally I'd wear a 50s shape, just below knee in a grown up print. Any ideas? I'm a horribly wobbly 16/18. I'm wearing lots of white stuff skirts. The prints are fun and they come in big sizes but hangy A-line shape is wrong on me. I look pregnant. V embarrassing.

Grateful for any help. Thanks

"It looks like a tea towel"

Why yes, and that's exactly what makes it good/funny.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 09/08/2014 11:12

What was the quote from Miranda? 'Do you like it? Do you feel comfortable in it? Do you care what anyone else thinks about you wearing it? Then wear it!'
Or something.

revealall · 09/08/2014 11:32

Go to Get Cutie. I have lots of their stuff ,sale items mostly or from their site at eBay.
I have never seen anyone in the same clothes as me and the company are lovely to deal with.
I am a bit addicted now though.

BranchingOut · 09/08/2014 12:57

I am now in love with a dress in the same print!

One of the reviews mentions the dress getting 'appreciative glances from small boys'! Grin

heartshapedflux · 09/08/2014 22:31

I'm size 16, aged 35 and I could imagine myself wearing it. I think it's very much a "marmite" kind of skirt - some people might prefer safer choices, but you're not dressing to impress them, surely?

I love Get Cutie too and have four of their dresses (although always go a size up, if not two, because they are extremely small fitting).

loaderloader · 11/08/2014 14:30

I bought a new skirt!

Thanks to everyone who posted. A marmite skirt indeed! I used to like being "marmite" and wasn't bothered about looking different. Has been a good reminder.

I really love the buses print but Im put off by the shape and i do have a number of skirts/dresses I love but don't wear as they don't really suit me (I've been reading the flowchart!).

As I'm trying to lose a few pounds I'm going to hold off on spending much. The Get Cutie skirts I tried to order had a 4 WK delivery time so will hold off to see how I do weight wise first.

I have ordered this Nicola Quilter skirt so I can feel good in the meantime.

Thanks.

V nice skirt op

Greengardenpixie · 11/08/2014 16:03

I love Cath kidston prints and have bought 2 dresses...each that i have worn about once if at all - [trains print and garden birds]. I ended up selling both and am not buying anymore!!!! The truth is, i adore the quirky prints but i cant seem to get used to the shape of them. They are gorgeous and feel that while they do look ok on many older people and it did look fine on me, I felt too 'girly' in it..when im clearly not a girl anymore!! Thats just me. I contemplated the skirt many times instead but the reviews commented on the bunching. Why oh why cath kidston doesnt use these prints in a different style i have no idea. I would be more likely to buy her prints if they were on clothes shapes that flatter a variety of people. The in at the waist and pop out full skirt thing has never been me. In response to your question, i dont think you are too old...but is the style you like or the print. If it is the print...and dont think you would suit the style you are wise to avoid it!!

UriGeller · 11/08/2014 16:12

I like the buses skirt. I like prints. Its a bit Kirstie Allsop which would normally put me off but actually I think its lovely. I'd wear it with a little fine knit cardi.

I don't like the black one! Sorry!

Floisme · 11/08/2014 18:28

I'm quite partial to an eccentric print but, like a couple of other posters, I'd prefer this in a more classic style e.g. a pencil skirt or a fitted shirt. That's purely my personal taste and it's not an age thing; it's just that otherwise it feels a bit like death by quirkiness.

mathanxiety · 11/08/2014 18:42

The quirky print would look all wrong in a more sophisticated shape/style if it was to be that length. The ballooning out over the hips style is really the only one that would suit the print. Or a micro mini - I don't think the print is suitable for anything other than 'fun' styles.

Greengardenpixie · 11/08/2014 19:04

It would be cut on a A-line skirt and less cutsie tbh.

Greengardenpixie · 11/08/2014 19:04

Sorry *cute

Floisme · 11/08/2014 19:06

I don't agree math. I like the tension between a fun print and a classic style. But each to our own Smile

My skirt search left me wondering how difficult it is to sew. Once you've found a shape that works it just a matter of using whatever fabric you like. Tempted to investigate a few lessons and machine costs.

I love the CK prints. I saw the trains fabric on a skirt on eBay Greengardenpixie. It was even nicer. Shame about the cut.

The trains print was beautiful and i was so sad to sell it but i got a good price for it and i put my money to something i would wear. The birds print was to die for....

www.allthedresses.net/garden-birds-dress/

and im hankering after her clock print dress now and i will buy it because it isnt in that style.

BlanketSky · 11/08/2014 21:59

if you do want to sew skirts OP, I recommend www.amazon.co.uk/Sew-What-Skirts-Francesca-DenHartog/dp/1580176259/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407790623&sr=8-1&keywords=sew+what+skirts - they're very easy and made to your own measurements.

I quite like the bus skirt though know it would do nothing for my postpartum bodyshape (though maybe ds would actually stay with me if I were to wear it?)

mathanxiety · 11/08/2014 22:54

Hint if you get the book, get the spiral bound version. It's easy to use. You won't lose your page and end up following directions for a completely different item out of sheer featherheadedness. How do I know this might happen?-- Blush

saltnpepa · 12/08/2014 02:46

Since when did any woman want to look like the back-end of a bus?

burnishedsilver · 12/08/2014 03:46

Im really surprised at some of the responses. Im not in the UK. I have never in my life seen adult women dress in fabrics like that. In all honesty, I'd be laughed out if it if I showed up at the school gate that skirt.. Cath Kidson here is pretty much limited to mugs, tea towels and the odd beach bag.

Elswyth · 12/08/2014 10:17

The bird print has been my favourite (I agree it was to die for Grin), and the cottage print. I bought the birds in both colours eventually (skirts). I thought they looked like ugly curtain fabric, and for some reason that appealed Blush I think they're great for casual day wear.

Nothing has appealed from this collection, apart from the autumn bloom print, which I bought (still awaiting delivery, along with a lurex sweatshirt and a green cardigan).

nipersvest · 12/08/2014 10:24

i wanted to hate it with it being cath kidston and i'm not really a fan of hers, but that was until i saw the clocks version of the skirt, which i now love! Blush

i'm 44 btw and generally go by the rule with clothes that if you personally love it, wear it and sod what others think.

bewleysisters · 13/08/2014 20:36

burnished: perhaps a taste for kitsh/irony is style trait found more in Britain? We bought happily into the 'granny takes a trip' thing a couple of season ago?
