Am I too old for this skirt? London buses print!

I'm 38. I think I know its wrong. Any thoughts please?
skirt

Ideally I'd wear a 50s shape, just below knee in a grown up print. Any ideas? I'm a horribly wobbly 16/18. I'm wearing lots of white stuff skirts. The prints are fun and they come in big sizes but hangy A-line shape is wrong on me. I look pregnant. V embarrassing.

Grateful for any help. Thanks

It comes in a backpack too!

mrsmuffintop · 08/08/2014 03:48

It's cute, if you like it, wear it! Maybe with a plain, fairly fitted black top.

KoalaDownUnder · 08/08/2014 05:03

It's not something I'd wear, but I'd probably love it on someone else.

I don't agree with all the 'Am I too old for this?' on MN. Unless it's micro Daisy Dukes on a seventy-year-old, I don't think anyone's too old for anything much.

Captainweasel · 08/08/2014 06:31

I love it. Could you see if it's on eBay for cheaper then if you don't wear it or think it doesn't suit it's not a massive money waster...?

I'd totally wear it.

mathanxiety · 08/08/2014 06:39

I don't think it's a question of am I too old for this. To me, this pattern looks like something a tourist would buy and then think the better of it when she got home and make it into a cushion cover out of it.

HellonHeels · 08/08/2014 10:46

I love the print but that is not a flattering skirt shape. Even the very slim model looks huge-arsed in it.

amusing print, frumpy shape.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 08/08/2014 14:04

Sorry, I think I'm too old for that and I'm 23... It may just be the print that I hate.

WanderingTrolley1 · 08/08/2014 14:04

I would say not for anyone over 25.

Theoldhag · 08/08/2014 14:06

It is not a style that I would wear, but it looks fine elastic waist and all. A plain longish top with a simple belt would accessorise it nicely. I say if you like it then go for it Smile

loaderloader · 08/08/2014 14:49

Thanks all.

Mixed responses but not a resounding "no" to the skirt which I was expecting. Gives me confidence to try something similar. I'm now in love with the GetCutie website linked above.

Thought elasticated waste might be comfortable until I shift some baby weight but maybe that's letting things slip too far!

mathanxiety you made me laugh. I have some fabric from IKEA bought for a playroom wall hanging that i think would make a lovely skirt.

The best and most flattering elasticated waist skirts are the Whistles tube skirts. I bang on about them a lot on here, but that is because they are brilliant.

PlumpPartridge · 08/08/2014 15:01

I want to buy that skirt now. I'm 32.5. The DSs would love it Blush

loaderloader · 08/08/2014 15:44

Remus just had a look on Whistles website. Do you mean the jersey ones? Not sure would work with my tummy wobble. Are they not quite clingy?

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/08/2014 15:49

They are clingy, yes, but they hold it all in. Just wear with a top that skims over the tummy.

guitarosauras · 08/08/2014 16:12

It looks like a tea towel. I wanted to love a bus print skirt.

mathanxiety · 08/08/2014 21:28

Remus has the right idea for the wobbly of tum. You need something to hold it in around the waist and something on top to skim over. Elasticated waists don't sit right on anyone except the very slim.

MrsCosmopilite · 08/08/2014 21:38

Not my thing but I have passed the stage of considering whether age is applicable to what I wear.
If I like something and can afford it, then I will get it. I don't care if it's in Top Shop, the Charity Shop or a one-off designer piece. I don't care if nobody else likes it, I'm wearing it, not them.

I said this to a friend of mine over lunch the other day and he said he liked that I didn't care, and that my style suited me. If it helps I'm older than you and wear recycled sari skirts, vest tops with cardis and Emily strange T-shirts a lot.

ihatethecold · 08/08/2014 21:47

The link for the poppy site has some lovely skirts.
Bit expensive for my budget though. Boooo

loaderloader · 08/08/2014 22:57

Sounds like a fun style MrsC. I didn't always care what people thought. I like fun clothes but thought I might start to look silly. Just overthinking it as I'm not looking my best at the mo. I've always thought people look best when they're comfortable and confident.

Yep Poppy skirts lovely.

Poppy is great shop. Good quality and excellent customer service. The adult skirts/dresses have never tempted me though because they're exactly the same pattern and fabric as the children's clothes. They even do pettiskirts for adults!

Justinepants · 09/08/2014 02:06

Nicola Quilter also good for interesting skirts, although she doesn't seem to have updated her designs for ages.

MrsCosmopilite · 09/08/2014 10:51

loader - I think that skirt's fun - I like the brightness too. You know what? I have devised a little flowchart now for clothes - I take it shopping with me...

Definitely feeling comfortable and confident is a big part in it.
Hope you end up with something you like at the end of this thread. :)

it is awful and the kind of thing a Japanese grandmother might buy on a one off trip to London.
bloody dreadful print sorry
