Mole removal

Hi. I'm having a mole removed from my face later this month and I'm getting a bit worried about what it will look like afterwards. Has anyone else had this done? What is your scar like?

I had one removed from the back of my leg - the scar is about the size of a 5p piece but very very faint.

Are you having it removed as prevention or because it has changed appearance? If the latter then they do remove the mole as well as some surrounding flesh just to be safe...

Thanks for answering Nancy. It's prevention/cosmetic so hopefully the scar won't be much bigger than the mole.

I had one removed from my temple, purely for cosmetic reasons. My gp did it with a cauterising knife. The scar was red for a while but 8 months on and you wouldn't even notice it anymore.

I had one removed from my chin. There is a scar but it is less obvious than the mole was.

Thank you Hesperus and Mae. That's reassuring!

Had it done today. The Dr. recommended shaving it off rather than cutting it out. Looks great already! If I'd known that I'd have had it done years ago.

That sounds great!
Did you have to have it done privately? I've got a large mole on my chin that I'd like to get rid of purely for cosmetic reasons. I understood that this couldn't be funded on the nhs but have no idea how to find someone to do it privately. What was the process?

ListObsessed · 30/07/2014 07:58

Appervine, I had it done privately as it was for cosmetic reasons and also I wanted a plastic surgeon to do it rather than a GP because it was on my face.

It was very quick - I had 2 done and I was in the consulting room for about 15 minutes. It involved an anaesthetic injection, then he shaved it off then did something that smelt of burning to seal the blood vessels. The nurse put some ointment on which they also gave to me to bring home. It has bled slightly overnight and is more obvious that it was yesterday but there is no pain at all.

Appervine, just realised I haven't answered your question. If you're self-funding you can just call your local private cosmetic hospital and book yourself in.

Thanks v much listobsessed. Can I ask how much it cost?

marne2 · 30/07/2014 22:05

I had one removed on my back and stupidly removed the butterfly stitches whilst cleaning it, I have a very large scar Sad. As long as you don't do what I did then you should be ok. I know someone who had one removed on their face and there is no noticeable scar on her face.

ListObsessed · 31/07/2014 09:09

Appervine, it was expensive at £435 but worth it and I wish I'd done it earlier. Another hospital nearby would have done it for £375 but they couldn't fit me in at the time that I wanted it done.

Hi List can I ask which hospital group it was? Bupa/bmi etc
I'm v keen to do this but don't know where to start really.
I'm in West London so too much choice is the problem!

ListObsessed · 31/07/2014 18:31

Half, the cheaper quote was from my local Spire hospital, but they couldn't do it when I wanted it done. Went with a local plastic surgery department who are on the same site as Spire, and the Dr. also works for Spire. Spire seem to have a good reputation nationally.

I've been looking at this - but i think the cost is prohibitive! Mine are intradermal naevi rather than moles - I feel like nanny McPhee in reverse as more appear on my face Confused

I might just take a Bic razor to them

List - thanks for letting me know the price. Sorry I didn't reply sooner. It's pricey isn't it. Good to know that it was worth it for you. I'm not ruling if out but need to start saving...
