Home laser hair removal - does it work?

I'm thinking about buying the Philips lumea for doing DIY IPL to get rid of my leg hair once & for all. Have you successfully used the Philips Lumea? Does it work? Is it worth the money? I'd love to hear your thoughts...

Bump - because I would also like to know!

I have one and it's pretty good. I've been using it for about two years now - initially every three weeks and now about every six weeks. I'm not totally hair free but it is loads loads loads finer - my pits, legs and bikini line need a quick shave every week to be totally smooth but it wouldn't matter if I missed one here and there.

I'm blonde too, so it's supposed to be even more effective if you're dark haired.

Mine cost 350 pounds from amazon

Thanks for your feedback googietheegg - do you mind telling me which model you bought? Also how long would it take you to do your legs in a session?

I bought one of these earlier in the week here. No idea if any good but comes with a 90 day money back guarantee so at least I can return if not convinced by results. They're a big investment! Can anyone explain the sun exposure issue?

Verystickypaws · 13/07/2014 10:02

I have a philips lumea and have used it twice now, so for 4 weeks. I've been concentrating on my pits and bikini area as the other areas of my body are harder to avoid sun exposure to at the moment. After the summer hols I'll tackle my legs.

My skin is very pale on the areas I've tackled and the hair dark, which is ideal really. It's not a magic overnight solution but I've noticed as massive reduction in hair growth. So by the time I go on my holidays there should be very few hairs left.

This is great of me as whatever hair removal I use on my bikini area I end up with a huge rash and in grown hairs. It's been worth it for that reason.

What about the one from boots?

bookcave · 13/07/2014 10:21

Hasn't worked for me - dark hair, pale skin. I've just swapped to salon treatment instead. There are so often good deals now on salon treatment that it's not necessarily dearer than the Lumea. It was just a waste of money for me, I should ebay it really. I'd look into your local deals at clinics and compare before you buy one. The clinic lasers are stronger and work faster.

I've got a boots smooth skin it's quite a few years old but I'm very pleased with it.
I used to have a bikin line down the inside and back of my tights to my knees.
I paid for a few sessions at a salon and then bought this and it's great.
Now I have virtually no hair on the bottom of my legs and about 99% removed on the bikini and virtually no armpit hair. I don't use it in the winter so would say that it's permanent. Now I just zap odd hairs that have spring up in the summer when I go without tights or just before hols and these are getting less and less.
There only area that hasn't been so good is upper lip and I think this is because the hairs aren't so dark or coarse
I think the boots system uses similar technology to salons so it gets permanent results.
There are some disadvantages as it's slow as there are delays between shots and the head does got hot but now as I'm only doing odd hairs that isn't too much of a problem although it did make doing large areas time consuming when I first had it and was doing whole legs.
I think some other makes are faster and don't have this problem but the pulses aren't so strong so they don't guarantee removal just reduction.

Mine is the one with the face attachment - lumea pro I think? It takes about 30 mins to do both legs up it just past my knees and about 2/3 mins each for pits and bikini line.
