Dressing for school speech day

Oh help!
Dc's primary school has a speech day tomorrow and gauging from the playground talk everyone will be dusting off their facinators tonight and generally dressing as though they're going to a wedding.
What do people really wear to these things? I'm not a smart dresser and don't own many smart things. I want to feel comfortable and 'me' but also not look like out of place.
Slightly regretting leaving it to the last minute...

Ok so what do you have or will you be able to go shopping before the event?

Hulababy · 09/07/2014 20:18

Wow - what type of school?!

DD's primary school (small independent) had an annual speech day. It was normal attire and nobody worried too much tbh. Many people were in work wear - having already been to work and/or turning to work, some were in jeans and top, others smarter normal day wear. There was nobody OTT and certainly not dressed for a wedding!

Smart yet not over doing it?

Maidupmum · 09/07/2014 20:41

Definitely get your eye make up done - get the make up artist to paint your eyes open & sleep through it Wink

Other than that I wouldn't dress up - it'll be hot & sweaty in there!

hula also a small independant school.
No time to go shopping now,but the outfits I do have are: a simple black wrap dress which I could wear with tan hasbeens or black wedges and a chunky silver necklace. Or a short, navy floral Warehouse shift dress with red heels?
Dotty those trousers are spot on, just what I would've bought. If I'd thought about an outfit sooner. I only have jeans, lots and lots of jeans.
Oh dear Maid is it going to be snoozetastically dull? Maybe I'll smuggle in a hip flask Grin

Probably go with the wrap dress and wedges. Slightly dressy but not over doing it. Understated and black pretty much works for most occasions. Let us know how it goes OP Grin

We had our speech day today ( also independent school). People were dressing smartly, but definitely not wedding wear. Your black dress with wedges will be fine

Well, really wasted my time worrying! Loads of parents wearing jeans, some smart, some no so smart. A real assortment.
At least it's all over (did sooo much clapping) and know now for next year.
