Curly girl method

Hi! I was wondering whether fellow curlies who have had success with the curly girl method can check whether my holiday hair plan sounds ok. I have thick, wavy/curly hair that always look like the 'before' photos of the frizz ease adverts. Dry and burnt (it isn't damaged) without curling, just frizzing.
I have it blow dried straight professionally every week because I am unable to manage it otherwise and make it look half decent. However, I am off for two weeks for a holiday in the sun where I will be swimming every day, so obviously a professional blow dry is not an option and I cannot blow it straight myself (it is very long and thick and it will be very hot and humid where we are going). Last year while on holiday I bought and used the entire range of frizz ease and I still looked a frizzy mess Angry. So the plan this year is to:

  1. Wash hair on the first day with a normal shampoo (probably borrow DH's pantene), condition as normal with Body Shop Rainforest Conditioner and use boots curling crème and gel for styling
  1. Wash hair every day after swimming with the Body Shop Rainforest Conditioner and apply the two styling products as above. No shampoo
  1. Shampoo with the Rainforest Shampoo every 3-4 days and follow with step 2

Does this sound about right? No frizz ease hair serum? What about coconut oil? Will the conditioner be enough to cleanse the styling products and the chlorine from the pool or the sea saltwater? Will my hair feel dirty without using shampoo?

Thanks in advance ladies!

If suggest the body shop rainforest hair butter too. I use it on DD and it makes the curls beautifully defined and soft.

JenniMoo · 09/07/2014 11:31

If you want to shampoo too (I often do after Ds swims) ten the same range has a nice loo poo shampoo.

Start curly girl method long before you're holiday otherwise you might be disappointed.

When washing your hair you need to really scrub it as won't have the agents to strip everything out.

I do this with DD's hair. It looks best when left to dry naturally from wet with a touch of body shop rainforest butter.

No idea how it will be but its not curly girl. For the CG method you need to wash once only get rid of any silicone then just wash using a silicone free conditioner. You need to make sure the products you use don't contain silicones including the fancy ones in things like Moroccan oil. Without silicone to mess stuff up your hair will be able to absorb butters and real oil. Salt water will make it shiny (seriously). But it takes some time to settle in and it doesn't work if there's silicone anywhere or you wash too often w shampoo esp if shampoo contain sls which I'm pretty sure pantene does.

ThePerfectNegroni · 09/07/2014 13:41

All the products listed above are silicone free and are CG friendly. It is CG, apart from the fact that you won't need to use the shampoo as often as you think.

JenniMoo · 09/07/2014 13:53

The op said she would only wash with Pantene on the first day, I think, which does fit the cg method as strips and silicones already on the hair.

Don't use crap products like FrizzEase.
Aveda's Be Curly conditioner is good, if you slather it on. Use it for washing your hair, rinse it out, then add some more and leave in to give curls definition without 'crispiness'.

Lottapianos · 09/07/2014 14:41

Step away from the Frizz Ease! It's full of silicone which does nothing at all for dry coarse hair. Ditto Moroccan Oil products.

I have very dry coarse curls and I get along brilliantly with Body Shop Rainforest Shampoo, Boots Curl Creme and Boots own brand purple gel. Sounds like you should be fine.

It takes between two to eight weeks for it to work so as mentioned you need to experiment well before your holiday. Though it doesn't work for everyone. I've been doing it for four months now and although my hair looks ok others get much better results.

Maraki · 09/07/2014 21:04

Thank you so much for the replies ladies! I didn't realise that CG takes EIGHT WEEKS to see results Shock. Yes, no more frizz ease then, I'll be saving a fortune

ZaraW I agree it doesn't work for everyone, it certainly didn't do anything for me, my hair looked terrible when I tried curly girl!

And I may as well admit it: I use Frizz Ease (and my hair looks great! :o )

Maraki · 20/07/2014 14:00

UPDATE: i have the best hair ever! Soft curls, not a hint of frizz! Amazing!!! Thank you so much for the advice! Thanks

The conditioner and the shampoo are not the nicest to use, takes a while to rinse out and hair feels dry, but the Boots curl cream and the pink gel that smells delicious are great. I am so impressed!!!!!

Frizz ease is going in the bin, I wonder if I can sue for 10 years of bad hair days?! Not to mention the small fortune I spent.

I no longer look as though I got my finger stuck in the plug

I tried CG for three months and it looked exactly the bloody same, except my scalp never felt clean...

Firsttimer7259 · 20/07/2014 17:50

Nice to get an update - and great to hear you are seeing results you like. In terms of dryness try a little olive oil from the chemists to leave in occasionally - my hair is curlier than yours I think and can take lots of oil and grease without looking gunky. Tresemme do a thicker cone free conditioner in a pot that's nice too. I also fund the rainforest products a bit thin. Also occasionally just leave in the conditioner and see how that goes. Happy experimenting - it feels like a revelation doesn't it? My hair still makes me happy and it's been years of cg
