See that's what's worrying me, Heels (nice name BTW!) - I was a teenager in the 80s. Am I just channelling my youth?

Mid 40s is too old for white denim, unless, possibly, you live on the French Riviera - where all mutton dresses as lamb.

(not that I'm calling you mutton at mid 40s - but all the 70+s will be in white denim in Nice)

OK the image of the over-tanned, over-thin, cigarette-smoking older ladies of the Riviera has managed to still my lust for white denim

I'm 50 and not slim and I bought a lovely one in New York in May. I wouldn't wear it with white denim jeans as I think it would be he equivalent of double denim but I wear it with dresses and jeans and a denim skirt.
