Fat woman in bikini

I think Im going to get one.

Years ago, I went on holiday by myself to Corfu. I was slim but didn't think it. Anyway, the beach was full of German women, big women. All in bikinis.

Did they care that they had belly fat? Did they care their boobs were skimming their knees? Did they fuck?

Did they have fun? Oh yes.

Did I have fun in my sports cut one piece? Nope.

So I plan to be a German woman this summer. Yes I'm fat (size 16) but I plan to wear a two piece.

Anyone have any ideas? I've seen a big knicker one in Next.

I prefer one pieces simply because I'm very active in the water. I haven't worn a bikini for years, mostly because of this but for figure reasons too.

Got to agree though when I go on holiday and see very very overweight women wearing bikinis and still looking great I wander why I worry about it.

I wore a bikini for the first time a couple of years ago at the age of 52.
I am six feet tall and size 14.
Nobody ran away screaming.
H raised an eyebrow but he's an arse.

I am a 32E and got a couple from Fantasie.
Great support.

All I remember from Irish beaches is women of all shapes and sizes in bikinis. I don't think they were all German or French or whatever.

Go for it!

(I have a few nice tankini tops myself. I like boyshort bottoms in black and they go with pretty much anything on top).

Good grief, it shouldn't take "courage" to wear a bikini - walking into a war zone to provide medical aid takes courage (I'd imagine), not wearing a certain type of clothing.

I remember my grandad, upon overhearing me venting my teenage self-consciousness, roaring "what on earth makes you think anyone's that interested in you?!" and it think there's a lot of truth in that. Most people are far too hung up on their own stuff to pay too much attention to yours.

Well, there are different levels of courage, to be fair - obviously walking into a war-zone takes a lot more than wearing a bikini, but that doesn't mean the fear of baring your body in public isn't real!

Most of us who are daunted by the idea of wearing a bikini know that we're being silly, but fear isn't any less real for being irrational.

I'm nearly 50 & still wear a bikini and I'm far from Kate Moss.
I do wear decent sized bottoms which are often hard to find. Why are they always so low cut?

Please wear whatever you like but personally, I can't be bothered with a bikini. It's nothing to do with my age or size - I switched to a one piece in my late 20s when I was barely a size 6. I was fed up with pulling and tugging and checking it was all still in place and found that, with a swimsuit, I could just put it on and then forget about it. I don't sunbathe anyway so that was never an issue. I still manage to have fun, thank you.

I wear a one piece for swimming at the pool as I do distance swimming and prefer my sports costume for that, but on the beach a bikini it will be and with a well fitting bikini there is no fiddling and adjusting. Plus my new bikini top or tankini top look great with a pair of shorts or denim skirt and can easily chuck a little shirt on if we head into town etc.

I agree with 5madthings. Bikinis these days don't need constant fiddling with.

I went on holiday to Ireland last year. I don't think I saw anyone on the beach in a bikini. It was nice weather too (some of the time).

Try New Look and M&Co for reasonably priced bikinis that aren't too skimpy, both have a fairly decent selection.

Germans seem to be very at home with their bodies. Very confident. I remember on holiday in Egypt I was in the showers at a camp site, with other Brits and the Germans were entirely naked. We shuffled in with our towels!!!

I prefer Tankinis as I feel they are more practical than a swinsuit (for visiting the loo I mean!!). I prefer then to bikinis. However, if you like yourself in a bikini - go for it! The beaches are not just for the young and slim (except that one in Italy).

"The beaches are not just for the young and slim"

Exactly. They are for all to enjoy regardless of age and shape. We tend not to holiday in places where only the young and beautiful go anyway.

To the people asking why one piece swim suits are more practical than bikinis - I don't think anyone was trying to start an argument about one looking better than the other, but one piece's are undoubtedly more practical from a wearer's perspective! You don't have to worry about the bottom's sagging down (or even falling off in some cases!) when you come out of the sea and have an arse full of sand, if you jump/dive into a pool you don't have to worry about the top flying up/down and exposing your boobs (this has happened to me....three times, each time in a different bikini!), if you're swimming then there is much less drag on the swim suit from the water, so you don't need to keep pulling it up.

The only thing bikini's are actually better for is going to the loo and tanning!

I used to swim all year round when I was younger, so can speak from experience :)

I don't mind bikini's providing I can wear shorts with them. My figure is okay, but I have the WORST cellulite on the backs of my legs. Like, really bad. I'm 5 foot 9 and only just 9 stone (at my heaviest) so not even remotely overweight. Does the cellulite seem to care? No.

A bikini in Ireland?! How about spending your money on a parka instead?!

I would say that those bikinis with the big pants are worse than the small-bottomed ones. All the big pants ones do is draw attention to a less than svelt bottom and leg area. Especially those 50s-type sets - they look most unflattering on anyone who is larger than a stick insect. Like kaykayblue, I wear shorts with a bikini top, which is ok for being more active on beach etc.

It's all very well for people to profess that it's bad to have body hang-ups, but all the same one wants to feel confident. With a teenage son and a critical tweenage dd, I think the only beach attire that would pass muster is a wind break wrapped round me.

Can only echo what most are saying, wear whatever you like, people are only worried about how they look, and won't give a moment's thought to how you look. I think bikinis on curvy women look great (I've got a boyish figure, and I wear bikinis as I like how they look, but long for some curves to fill them out a bit. A waist would be nice too).

I say go for it. Most people are too worried about themselves to care about how a stranger looks anyway. Have you seen this? I especially liked the bit about a fat woman being unable to operate the complicated strappage of a bikini! I wholeheartedly recommend the Pour Moi azure bottoms, but if you have boobs don't get the halterneck top. It ties at the neck and back and provides no support at all. There is a balconette version with a clip back which is meant to be much better.

I agree with the buy bigger bottoms thing - all the way.
I got a great pair of bottoms from Debenhams, the John Rocha range - sooooo flattering. I got the top from Kelly Brooks New look range, really good for us busty ladies! I am a size 32 E and its the only pretty one I could find!

Are you completely mad?

You are planning on wearing a bikini? In Ireland?

Hah!

I wear the tie at the side bottoms, like this

You can tie them just right so they don't cut into fleshy hips like fixed bottoms often do.

So long as you put something on when you leave the beach wear what you want. I have unpleasant memories of red skinned swimwear clad people in the supermarket in Lahinch...yack.

I have a wobbly pot belly, rest of me is a 12...I have a lovely biking from Seafolly with a poper bra top and bottoms that cut across the fattest ppimt in a straight line, it's pretty flattering. If I am really swimming or diving I have a one piece from Prima Donna. Both were expensive but are years old now and still in great shape.

Well fair play op, but your going to freeze to death in Clare without a nice pullover, never mind a bikini!

I am fat - about 3 stone over a healthy weight, and I was sooo bloody hot last year in a one piece, so I have bought some really nice bikinis this year and I'm going to let it all hang out with all the Greek grannies!

I really do think that generally British women do have a self-esteem issue when it comes to their bodies.
