Help me decide what to wear please?

I am going to a birthday day/night out in a few weeks and can't work out what would be best to wear.

We are going for a late lunch meal, which will be quite a large meal, followed by afternoon pub drinks, then onto a few bars in the evening.

I am useless with heels, so don't want to be stuck in them all day, and I am very petite so prefer to have legs out rather than boobs!! Any ideas what would be suitable for the whole day? We are going to need to look smart for the evening but I don't want to look too dressed up during the day part!

I am 5ft4 ish and a size 6-8.

Also, if it's relevant, the birthday event is for my very recent ex's birthday, and I have heard through the grapevine he might be bringing a date, so I don't want to look a complete mess

I would wear a summery dress with wedges and statement jewels

They would work with something summery but you don't want too summery if you are out all day in something really light in colour, good chance of spills and marks etc.

Whistles have some good dresses in the sale that would work with those shoes, what do you prefer fitted or shapeless (but in a good way)
dresses?
