Do you size up or down?

This was nearly my thread title so would love any answers to this specifically....am I right in thinking that many clothes gradually shrink in the wash? In which case it might be better to go up in size?

I am apple shape, 42 years old and have the usual 42 year old wobbly bits. I'm in between a size 12-14 depending on the clothing/brand. But sometimes it's really hard to choose.

I've just ordered some stuff on ASOS and not sure what to keep/send back. Am I right in thinking that ASOS are quite generous in size (as most of their stuff I feel I am more a 12) whereas New Look is not (more likely a 14?).

It depends upon the brand. No idea about asos own brand. I have bought shorts from their and they were tiny but not aso own make.

Generally I size up but I don't know about asos own brand sizing

StatisticallyChallenged · 04/07/2014 18:22

Asos own brand is just very variable IME - especially if you have wobbly bits as sometimes the fabrics are a bit on the flimsy side so whilst a smaller size fits it might not flatter! They do some lovely stuff too though.

I size up in tops as generally I need the boob room and don't like anything too tight around my tummy flab (unless the shoulders are too wide then I get the smaller size). I tend to size down with jeans and stretch trousers. I find they loosen after a couple if hours wear anyway.

Toast, Gap, Hobbs, Whistles, Jaeger - size down

& Other Stories, Banana Republic, Jigsaw - exact size

Cos - all over the freakin place

whethergirl · 04/07/2014 22:47

Ah that's the thing Pumpkinette - some things do loosen after a couple of washes/wears and I'm sure some clothes shrink after a few washes.

trousers jeans if between sizes would almost always size down.

tops, although the temptation is usually to size down (makes me feel better buying the smaller size), I make myself have a good hard look in the mirror and just lately have been sizing up - right decision on most recent purchases definitely.

It varies wildly for me by brand and also shape of the garment. I now (through trial and error!) have a rough idea of which if my dimensions are out of proportion according to how clothes are sized, so depending where it clings (or not) I can usually tell what size to get.

RonaldMcDonald · 04/07/2014 23:42

I'm anywhere between a 10 ( bottom half ) to a 14.
I hate the completely random sizing and even worse the walking gamble that is ASOS

OneLittleLady · 04/07/2014 23:44

depends on the shop, some I size up in, some down. I usually know from older clothes what to expect in the shops I normally buy in. I've got a size 12 Hobbs skirt but recently bought a size 16 in Primark and normally I'm a 14 (at the minute anyway!)

LumionaMoonsplash · 04/07/2014 23:48

Depends on the style and fabric for me, size down for stretchy and forgiving fabric or size up with tougher or delicate fabrics where boob gaping or muffin top is likely.
