I have always wondered this!!!!! My dd had nits a few weeks ago...and i think i had them. Needless to say i treated myself and then dyed my hair shortly after. I too have wondered this!

Greengardenpixie · 04/07/2014 10:32

Oh i think the best way to get rid tbh is tons and tons of conditioner and a nit comb in the shower and comb the hell out of your hair!!!

AuntieStella · 04/07/2014 10:33

No it doesn't.

They need serious organophosphates or smothering agents.

The concentrations of bleach required to kill would burn your scalp and cause your hair to fall out.

Greengardenpixie · 04/07/2014 10:36

Thanks for that :) I have always wondered. What i do is get treatments from the chemist, then use conditioner and comb comb comb a few days later then dry and use a straigthner as insurance!!!
I am a primary teacher and nits are a hazzard of the job annoyingly.

What Auntie said!

Lovage · 04/07/2014 10:39

Thank you, AuntieStella.

Greengardenpixie - yes, the kids had them, I conditioned and combed myself, couldn't find any but was still itchy, then dyed my hair and stopped being itchy. However, since so much of the itchy is psychological, perhaps I will choose to continue to believe that hair dye kills them, since I do that every couple of months anyway.

Well they probably dont like it!!! The itching can continue though even although they are all dead. Its an allergy to their saliva yuk yuk that causes the itching so that takes a few days to go away.
I had headlice really bad one time and it gave me a rash on my neck. The little b*rds were biting me there...OMG so gross. The strange thing is, i dont feel them until its bad....ggrrr

Bowlersarm · 04/07/2014 10:43

I was always paranoid about getting them from the kids. When they had them, and I had a bath, I used to lay back with my hair submerged thinking I was drowning them. Waste of time,I now understand as the pesky critters can't drown.

Greengardenpixie · 04/07/2014 10:45

Well my dd was infested with them recently. I used two brands and more eggs just appeared later so i slapped conditioner on her head and went thoroughly through it. She hated it but what can you do?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/07/2014 11:05

No it doesn't

They are nearly indestructible - most treatments will suffocate them but alot don't kill them.
At least anything oily will let the comb slide through (the Nitty Gritty has spiral tines) and grip the eggs to strip them off the hair shaft.
