Holiday bag?

Going on hols in a couple of days to France.
Have a cross body bag that I use day to day that is probably too large for travel and was hoping to find a bag that would meet several requirements:

Small enough to wear out for dinner, where all I would need to carry would be wallet and keys and lippy
Big enough to throw a couple of Tablets or Nintendo DS's into
Possibly something that would double up as a day trip bag and hold a few snacks and a bottle of water (probably stepping outside the realms of possibility here!

I have a fabric long handled beach bag type thing that works as a day trip bag and can come on the airplane with us and hold snacks, gadgets and passports/ wallet etc.
So maybe I just need a small bag to bring on short trips to hold keys/ cards/ antihistamines/ tissues and possibly a few kid related bits?

Any thoughts or suggestions?
What do you people usually bring on hols?

Longchamp Le Pliage? A great day bag on hols, wouldn't call it hugely smart but ok for informal meals out, go for a black one maybe for max sleekness. The shopper style is best as the long handles mean you can wear it on your shoulder.
