What to wear to school interview? Help!

I have applied for a TA job at a local school which it is fairly likely I will be asked to interview for (have done lots of voluntary work in this role, etc.) and have taught the year group it's in in the past ( was a teacher many moons ago!)

I have been out of schools being a sahm and also childminding for a few years and am now hoping to join this school as a T.A. I feel my interview prep is going fine but have no clue as to what to wear!

I'm limited in getting-to-the -shops ability (only just learned to drive, stuck in middle of nowhere, very busy day to day working life) so am thinking about ordering online. I also have a Next voucher I'm hoping to use up.

So........would you go for

  1. Smart suit with camisole or shirt underneath, or is that overdoing it? I have a navy Jigsaw pinstripe trouser suit that's about 10 years old but still just fits....? Think it's bootleg though, may be a bit dated.
  2. Smart ish navy trousers and crisp white cotton shirt?
  3. As above but with pretty white cotton short sleeve blouse?

I have very few clothes, all from charity shops, which have tided me over the last few years, but now I feel all at sea!!! The job means a lot to me and I don't want to get it wrong.

And shoes....are ballerina flats ok? Or heels? Kitten heels?! Scarf? Jewellery?!

I know it's a petty dilemma but am hoping some school workers could advise. Thanks in advance.

No.3 sounds good to me.

What are the trousers like?

gerbo · 26/06/2014 18:32

Tethersend...they are navy, tapered, thin belt, fairly formal next ones. They have mixed reviews but I'd only wear them for best so doesn't matter how they wash really! Ankle length. Can you wear those with ballerinas? I'm not a heel woman. Thanks for your message too.

Yes, sounds great with ballet flats.

You could add a jacket like this

I work at a school and interview the TA's. Numbers 2 or 3 both sound fine.

Blimey, baby barrister, you're right!

Thank you Smile

Ladies I've decided on navy tapered next trousers with sharp white shirt and flat nude ballerinas. Not earth shaking but smart and professional and not too formal.

Thanks for all your help.

Hope you get the dress, tethers!

Argh. Am not married yet, but broke!

And not a size 12... But could possibly become one given a decent length of time... Hmm...

Good luck with the interview, gerbo Smile

I recently went to an interview and wore black tapered trousers from next that sound similar to yours and a crisp white shirt tucked in with rolled up sleeves.
I also wore these black shoes www.next.co.uk/x534322s5

They look ugly in the pictures but they are now some of my favourite shoes!

I loved the look together and it was a group interview and I know it sounds boastful but my outfit looked more slick and professional than most of the other interviewees.

I also got the job!

Didn't accept because of the two weeks ago training it involved, boooo :(
