Tips on dyeing clothes?

I have a shirt dress in a mid dark base colour but with a pattern on it in lighter colours. I love the shape and fit but don't like the pattern any more and want it one solid colour.

Would dyeing it a darker color make everything merge? or would the pattern still be visible?

Any tips on dyeing too?
TIA

First check the fabric. IME only 100%cotton really dyes well. Also check the stitching. Once dyed some jeans black but ended up with white stitching!

And yes, the pattern will almost certainly still be visible. If you really don't care about losing the dress and are open to an experiment go ahead, it might look nice. If you went a darkish grey it might be interesting.

I've just been buying dye, as it happens. Whilst I bought machine Dylon, there is a dye called iDye, which has 2 types - 1 for cotton and 1 for polyester. If the fabric you're dying is a mix, you can use both together to ensure it's all covered. The poly range is more limited though. I'd be interested to know how it turns out.
