Anyone interested in a plus size summer style thread?

peachesandpickles · 17/06/2014 17:06

There's been a few of us 16+ looking for advice in recent weeks. I think it might be good to have a thread where we share our best finds and swap advice.

Anyone interested? I'm an 18 on top, 16 on bottom apple shape.

Currently I'm trying to find some non-tunic type tops to wear with short, a-line skirts so I'd love some recommendations.

Also looking for flattering shorts. I'd love just one pair this summer.

My one recommendation so far is to find a good quality jersey maxi dress. I bought one a few summers ago and love it. Despite what a lot of people say I think maxis can look well on plus sizes especially if it is straighter jersey one rather than full on billowy one.

I can see me going jacketless at this rate. To add insult to injury there is now 40% off the jacket today!

Thanks Peaches, I like the jacket you linked to but can't get it delivered in time and it wasn't in my local store.

I am currently out for lunch in a near by city so will try the bigger store if I have time on the way home.

WildFlowersAttractBees · 25/06/2014 13:19

ICanHearYou, have you tried lanicane anti chafing gel?

Fairylea · 25/06/2014 13:21

Ican- get some long sloggi knickers from yours. Honestly they are amazing and have changed my summer options. They aren't like spanx so they don't dig in and are cotton (98%) so very cool. They are really thin so don't show under dresses etc, especially in the nude colour. I absolutely love mine. Not exactly sexy but honestly they are so good.

ICanHearYou · 25/06/2014 13:49

Oooo thanks, I will grab some of those.

Bit unsure of using gels because... well I am susceptible to boils in that area and really aggressive spots :(

polyhymnia · 25/06/2014 13:52

Never had any problems like that with Lanacane - it's a miracle product and not at all greasy,

ICanHearYou · 25/06/2014 14:41

Okay well thanks for the tips :) Really appreciated because at the moment I am having to change every time I want to walk somewhere! Very annoying

WildFlowersAttractBees · 25/06/2014 17:56

I have never had a problem with lanacane I also use it as a primer under my make up!

keely79 · 26/06/2014 14:53

If anyone is on the lookout for a classic trench coat for the autumn, picked one up in Banana Republic in XL (I'm a 36G and it fitted over my chest - miracles will never cease) for only £50 (down from £125). Bargain.

magentastardust · 26/06/2014 15:50

There is something else called Bandalettes or similar? They are supposed to be good for thigh chafing! If you look it up in search there will be a few threads. They look like hold up stocking tops.
Otherwise people on here also recommend a product called body glide.

WildFlowersAttractBees · 26/06/2014 18:22

Keely, could you post a link please? I can't find it on their British site.

keely79 · 26/06/2014 18:28

The exact one is not on the site as far as I could see - in the colour I got it in at least. This is similar but mine was almond (so a slightly darker shade than pictured):

Also I know it's a granny clothes site and they're not very pretty undies, but Damart does multipacks of longer-legged knickers and cheaper than Sloggi. The legs are a bit less long though.

Here, here and here.

GatoradeMeBitch · 27/06/2014 19:37

I can't wear jeggings/skinny jeans. I do not want to declare my current leg shape to the world!

Today I bought some jeans from Evans that have an elasticated waist and promise to help you look like you've dropped a size. They look bloody ridiculous until they're covered with a top, like toddler jeans, but then the fact that there is no 'bulk' does help me look slimmer round the middle. Jury's out on whether I like them or not!

WildFlowersAttractBees · 28/06/2014 08:10

Thanks guys. I didn't get the job... Possibly the jacket Wink.

Oh well, there will always be other jobs.

hiccupgirl · 28/06/2014 08:24

This is a great thread.

I'm a 22 and have been forever tbh - never yet found the motivation to do anything about though running round after my DS does keep me a lot fitter than before I had him.

I can't remember the last time I went into Evans. I find their clothes soul destroying and they make me look bigger. My favourites at the mo are Sainsburys and the Mantaray range at Debenhams.

Sainsburys jeans are a great fit on me and I always manage to pick some up in the sales for silly prices. It's worth trying a range of their sizes and lengths because they are really random. But they fit well and last well for the price. Their leggings are great too if you're fine with wearing them.

peachesandpickles · 28/06/2014 09:19

Sorry to hear that wild. I'm sure you'll get the next one.

OP posts:
peachesandpickles · 28/06/2014 09:26

Hi hiccup girl , i agree about Evans. I used to shop there occasionally but haven't bothered for ages.

No Sainsburys here unfortunately.

In terms of jeans I have a pair from Next that are from a lift and shape range or something like that and they are amazing. High waist, lots of stretch and very slimming.

I wear skinnies and jeggings because as an apple shape my legs are the smallest part of me but I got the Next ones in bootcut and they are definitely more flattering.

Mint Velvet Sale- has plenty size 18 sale items

Some of them are a bit boxy for me and add to size but there are some nice pieces.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 28/06/2014 15:27

I got a lovely flattering top from Red Herring here its a slight swing style so no clinging.

Maverick66 · 28/06/2014 15:53

Hi Wild sorry about job ;( my own DD went for an interview this week - she didn't get job either but "what is meant for you, won't go by you" (sorry I know it's a cliché)

Totally agree with hiccup girl about Sainsburys - great linen trousers at moment.

House of Fraser have a great sale on lots of bargains ;)

Peaches - keep up the good work on the thread :):)
