Hair washing questions

HilariousInHindsight · 16/06/2014 20:11

I just have a few questions to ask you about washing your hair.
I am trying to figure out if I'm using too much/too little of each product and/or if I'm washing my hair too regularly or not.
So:

How often do you wash your hair?
What shampoo and conditioner do you use?
How much shampoo compared to conditioner do you put in your hair?

Thanks for answering. :)

Wash it about every 2 days, might drag it out to 3 with dry shampoo but if it's looking greasy it always gets washed. My hair is really thick and I use loads of shampoo or else I don't get a lather, and I use about double the amount of conditioner. I tend to buy 2 conditioners for every shampoo. Personally, I like vo5 or dove shampoos as they leave my hair feeling nice and soft and smell gorgeous. Also treat myself to Aussie 3 minute miracle which is fab and smells amazing!

2Kids2Cats1Dog · 16/06/2014 20:35

Honey I was the same as you, used twice as much conditioner for every shampoo.
Asked hairdresser once, she said most people its other way round, twice as much shampoo..realised its cos they shampoo twice, and i was using too much conditioner, wondered why my hair needed washing a lot, it was too heavy with conditioner.

HilariousInHindsight · 16/06/2014 20:37

See I do the same as you Honey and was wondering if I was using too much conditioner.

  • I wash my hair every day
  • whatever is on special offer. At the moment Pantene.
  • I use a squirt of each
Madamecastafiore · 16/06/2014 20:39

Every day, sometimes twice depending on going to gym.

Use same amount of each, shampoo and conditioner. A 10p size.

Use apple flavour head and shoulders shampoo and conditioner.

HoneyBooBooChild · 16/06/2014 20:56

I tend to put the bulk of the conditioner on my ends and then just smooth a bit through the roots, so I don't think it makes mine greasy. Although it's very thick and does need the conditioner. I only ever wash it twice if I'm using a medicated shampoo. When I used to wash it everyday to clear up my psoriasis flakes, it just got worse and my scalp dried out. Vicious cycle!

PinkandTwinkly · 16/06/2014 21:00

Daily, sometimes twice. My hair never gets greasy but shampooing wakes me up and makes me feel clean.
My hair eats conditioner so use at least twice the amount to shampoo.

I have thick, mid back length hair

blondiebonce · 16/06/2014 21:02

Wash my hair every other day, use about a 50p sized dollop of shampoo and half as much conditioner. I only use the conditioner from about midway to the ends. My hair is about mid-boob length haha.
I usually buy Alberto balsam but before the days of having to budget I'd use whatever nice brands especially for blondes were on offer- I.e Elvive, John Frieda, Andrew collinge.

SirNoel · 16/06/2014 21:10

I wash 5 days a week (two days a week I get up at 4:15 so I miss those days)

I use Bedhead shampoo and .......I don't use conditioner

Amethyst24 · 16/06/2014 21:14

I shampoo once or twice a week and wash with conditioner only the rest of the time - every day/every other day/after exercise.

ilovepowerhoop · 16/06/2014 21:15

wash every 2 days. My hair is short so only use a small blob of each. Using L'Oreal Elvive at the moment (is my favourite)

InspirationFailed · 16/06/2014 21:18

Every 4-5 days
I use twice as much conditioner as shampoo
I have very long, thick curly frizzy hair, takes ages to dry and looks awful unless I use the straighteners on it. Takes over 2 hours to wash and sort my hair out Shock I would do it more often but with 4 children including 2 breast fed, non sleeping toddlers I just don't get chance.

I use the Australian miracle stuff

ChippyMinton · 16/06/2014 21:22

Every 3 days. I use the L'Oreal Everpure shampoo and conditioner - it doesn't really lather, so once you get used to that, you only use a tiny amount.
I've given up styling products in favour of percy & reed wonder balm, and my hair doesn't seem to attract grease and dirt like it used to with mousse, so it goes longer between washes.

r2d2ismyidealman · 16/06/2014 21:29

Daily, sometimes skipping a day. I do it for the style I get with freshly washed hair. I use a deep condition each time.

IAmANightOwl · 16/06/2014 21:32

Newbie here Grin

I do things differently when it comes to hair washing - I condition my hair first and then shampoo Grin Works for me because I have very fine, shortish hair that is very easily weighed down by conditioning. Currently I am using the Paul Mitchell Color Care system every other day. Smile

AlpacaYourThings · 16/06/2014 21:32

Every 2-3 days.

No conditioner, just shampoo. (And my hair is much softer and since I stopped using conditioner)

2 x 50p coins of shampoo

readyforno2 · 16/06/2014 21:36

2-3 times a week. I use the Aussie moist stuff, including the 3 minute miracle which I use at least once a week.

I have so much hair it takes ages to wash, it's also permed so don't blow dry it.

Catswiththumbs · 16/06/2014 21:49

5p blob of shampoo and condition after.

Wash every other day. Maybe once every 3 days. More when it needs a cut to make it easier to style.
I have a very short crop, and use either a protein rich product, or a moisturising one, depending on my hair at the time.
I use redken, Aussie/dove/Pantene/tressemme are all rubbish for your hair (product build up etc)

Jellykat · 16/06/2014 21:50

I wash 2-3 times a week, my hair is layered but long, coloured and very fine.
I use Pantene Aqua Light shampoo, and Elvive conditioner for coloured hair.
The last rinse is cold, which helps to make hair shiny.
Then i apply a small amount of my special leave in conditioner to add texture and de-frizz, and leave to dry naturally in a high ponytail which lifts the roots, otherwise it's flat as anything on top.

AShadowStirsWithin · 16/06/2014 21:58

I dye my hair every 5-6 weeks which makes a difference to how I wash it as opposed to when it was undyed.
I wash it with shampoo every 4 days as more than that fades the colour too fast. On days I wash it I also condition with a colour depositing conditioner. On non washing days I wet it in the shower and use a hair mask product which gets left on hair for 5 mins before rinsing.

I used to have incredibly greasy hair that needed double shampooing daily but since dying I haven't had grease at all, even after 4 days it just gets a bit dirty but not greasy. I assume the dye dries the hair which leads to no grease?

AShadowStirsWithin · 16/06/2014 22:00

Oh and it's a vey short crop cut, I colour it a strong red. Use Tre Semme colour protect shampoo and the depositing conditioner is Bumble.

goodasitgets · 16/06/2014 23:22

Dry, thick, curly hair
Wash every 2-4 days
Generally l'oreal ever riche or ever pure
Shampoo - about a 50p blob, wash once
Conditioner - a full handful Blush and then probably a bit more (my hair is insanely dry)

goodasitgets · 16/06/2014 23:23

Oh and then I put awapuhi dry oil on (a handful), a blob of curl cream and then some more oil
Damn my hair Grin

puregrey · 16/06/2014 23:34

I wash my hair once or twice a week. It is thick, waist length hair prone to dandruff. Use an Elvive anti-dandruff shampoo and Dove conditioner atm, but buy what's on offer (but usually an anti-dandruff brand)

Use quite a lot of shampoo, probably 3x50 pence blobs each time (2 washings each time).
About 10p blob of conditioner, only on mid-length to ends, if I can be bothered. Rinse off.

A 10p blob of leave-in conditioner plus a tiny bit of Argan oil on the ends afterwards. Leave to dry naturally.
