help me do a messy bun pleeeeeeeeaaase

i have tried lots , until my arms ache and my hair looks like a nest on springwatch and still i can't get it right .

i have long hair , covers boobs long , so maybe thats the problem ?
the world and his wife and every teen girl i see has managed to construct an effortlessly undone 'do' . How do i do it ?

Properly long hair is harder, DD2 and me can do them, DD1 has thick bra strap length hair and it does a neat bun much better than an arty dishevelled one. It just looks like a bun that's falling out.
