Can I colour over highlights?

I've had some highlights put into my mid brown hair but I really don't like them, probably because my hair is very short so they look really 'bitty'. If I used a brown dye over the top would it cover them or am I going to end up with green hair? There aren't loads (about 1/4 of my head) and they're not that light.

I know I should go back to the hairdresser but I don't want to complain as she only did what I asked for and I'm normally really happy with her.

Use a brown with a hint of gold in it like a level 5.3 and it will be fine. It won't turn green and will look natural rather than brassy. The colour will fade from these sections after a while but it should look tonal if you use a permanent.
