Has anyone ever dyed a leather bag?

I have a tote bag that cost £400. It's about 3-4 years old and has been used every day. It's an a burnt orange colour with brown lining. No zips apart from a zip pocket inside.

Looking online it seems you can buy leather dye which states it's for shoes and bags. I don't know how to do links...

Has anyone dyed a bag - were the results any good?

I tried but it was a bit of a disaster, I'm afraid. The dye didn't 'take' properly in the creases and half of it flaked off. If the leather had been less soft - or possibly if I had been more careful - it might have ended better. See what other posters say but I wouldn't risk it again unless it was a bag I wasn't bothered about - and definitely not if I'd paid £400 for it. Sorry.

Thank you for replying Floisme. No apology necessary! My instinct was that it was too good to be true really which is why I wanted to ask first. Would rather try and see if I can get anything for it on eBay than wreck it completely!

There is a company that will dye/restore leather bags for you if you google handbag clinic you will find them - I haven't used them myself but have seen their adverts in magazines.
