Toner after highlights?

I've been going to the same hairdresser for years for highlights....usually 2 colours.
I decided to have a change and went elswhere. 2 colours put on and then to my surprise toner was then appplied. I'd never had toner before. Hairdresser said it was just to reduce any brassiness. That scared me a bit!
Anyway the colour is lovely and I'm very pleased. Does anyone else have toner after highlights?

Ive been getting highlights for approx ten years. The stylist i have used for the past 3 years always uses toner after colour. The 3 previous stylists never did. To be honest i dont know what difference it makes but i hate going to the hairdresser and this one is amazing so im happy to have it applied!

Yes and it seems to be the most important bit tbh! I like a light ash blonde and have a dread of going orange - the toner is the bit that dictates how ashy or brassy golden it will be.
