Time to move on from the bikini?

I am 40, Size 8 and 5'6. My figure is fine but my I have a bit of a saggy post-kids tummy. I prefer bikinis as I am long of body but wonder whether my age and mummy tummy mean that it is time for a swimsuit or tankini. If the latter, are there any really great brands out there?

Fuck that - it's only time to stop wearing bikinis when you stop preferring them.

dexter73 · 27/05/2014 20:19

You sound like would look great in a bikini! I am older and bigger than you and I still wear one.

Laska42 · 27/05/2014 20:19

I didnt wear bikinis when i was 4st - 3st then 2st -then 1.5st heavier
..all through my 30s 40s.and early 50s. I do now .. (and im 56!) yup ok I still have a bit of a tum, but its just so great finally feeling ok about getting it out!

I'm also long bodied.. and prefer an underwired bra top on my bikinis. I like Panache , Lepel and Freya ranges ..in those ranges you can mix and match ..and i do have a couple of their tankini tops also (mainly for uk beaches where somehow i feel more comfortable covered up a bit ) , but always worn the bikini tops abroad..

Bggr worrying about 'mummy tummy' just go for it..

No one is looking at you. Wear what you are comfortable in.

littlegreengloworm · 27/05/2014 20:24

Size eight... I wouldn't even bother ith the bikini if I was that size Grin

Pagwatch · 27/05/2014 20:27

I'm 52. I still wear bikinis.
I do have a fantastic stomach though. Grin
Long body and no breasts means swimsuits are a nightmare. Bikinis far more flattering.

cutefluffybunnes · 27/05/2014 20:28

Wear the bikini. You'll look and feel better.

thepurplepenguin · 27/05/2014 21:04

I am the same size as you. I took 2 swimming costumes to Italy last year to hide my baby belly. I felt like such a twat as everyone else was in bikinis. Plus it was sweltering. Think it would have been far less noticeable I was trying to hide something if I'd just brazened it out. Bikinis all the way for me from now on.

CheeryName · 27/05/2014 21:12

I'm 37 and this summer for the first time in c.10 years I will be wearing a bikini. I am now too old to give a shit!

Cucumberscarecrow · 27/05/2014 22:19

Thank you. I'm off bikini shopping. Smile

Bikini always bikini

Blackjackcrossed · 28/05/2014 00:55

I like bikini top with swim shorts/surf shorts - much more flattering than skimpy bottoms.

BritabroadinAsia · 28/05/2014 01:54

Glad you are sticking with the bikini - 40 is still young (that's what I'm telling myself) and you clearly have the body for it! Mum tum, schmum tum...

50ShadesOfSummer · 28/05/2014 06:46

Glad the right advice has been given on this thread: wear the feckin bikini and stand proud!

(Mid 40s, size 10, small mum-tum, and intend to wear a bikini on the beach for the foreseeable. A few years ago took a swimsuit and a bikibi on holiday. Wore the swimsuit once. Bought another bikini out there. This year will take 4 bikinis and some cover-ups.)

MrsDavidBowie · 28/05/2014 06:58

I wore a bikini for the first time last year at the age of 53. I'm six feet tall, 11 and a half stone but never felt confident about wearing one before.

sherbetpips · 28/05/2014 07:05

Bikini definitely and a cover up for when walking around sitting down for lunch, etc so no-one can see the belly rolls!

Fairylea · 28/05/2014 07:11

Size 8?! I'd wear a bikini to tesco if I was a size 8. Go for it :)

Floisme · 28/05/2014 07:18

I'm going to go against the flow (kind of). I'm 57 now but I switched to a swimsuit in my 30s because I was fed up of the constant pulling and tugging. Admittedly I may have just needed a better fitting bikini! Anyway I tried on a swimsuit and I've never gone back. I'm an 8-10 and in pretty good shape so this isn't about size, age etc; I just find that in a swimsuit, I feel pulled together, elegant but best of all, relaxed. I'm all for wearing what the hell you like and would never, ever say that someone shouldn't wear a bikini but I'll be sticking with a swimsuit Smile

Cereal0ffender · 28/05/2014 07:46

I had never worn a bikini before and then I read this thread last year and went out and got one. I am 42 and a size 12
